WHAT IS BOX OF HOPE?

Box of Hope is a care package project created so our communities can join together and bless our North Korean refugee brothers and sisters living in the United States during the Christmas season.

WHY BOX OF HOPE?

Many refugees find themselves especially alone during the holidays. We found that loneliness and isolation have resulted in tragic consequences among resettled NK refugees in the U.S. and abroad. Box of Hope and other outreach efforts help provide a glimpse of grace and hope. Over the years we have seen the incredible impact of this relatively simple gesture

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

Due to CoVid-19 our 10th annual Box of Hope program will be a little different but we are committed to blessing the North Korean refugees and reminding them that even in this challenging season God has not forgotten them, nor have their friends at PSALT and all our partners!

This year we hope to raise enough to send e-gift cards to all the families as well as mail a smaller package of Christmas cards and treats to each of the recipients. Although we will not hold our annual packing party this year, we are still gratefully collecting Christmas cards and monetary donations to help cover the costs of e-giftcards and shipping.

Box of Hope: Background

WHAT IS HOPE VILLAGE?

The idea for Box of Hope grew out of PSALT’s Hope Village work, which outreaches to North Korean refugees living in the United States and educates volunteers in North Korea-focused ministry work and refugee outreach.

It is important to note that Hope Village is network of individuals, churches, ministries, organizations and agencies designed to aid

North Korean refugees in the process of resettling in the United States. It is not a specific location or “village.” North Korean refugees are scattered throughout the United States.

Our vision is to provide a sense of community to North Korean refugees who often face loneliness, isolation, guilt and fear as they

try to adjust to their new homes. By reaching out to them and assisting them with practical life matters or listening to their stories and prayer requests, we want them to experience God’s love and grace through community by being there for them and taking action to help when needed. We hope our presence and the efforts of our partners will assist them in their journey to heal, grow, become productive members of our society, allowing them to gain a sense of fulfillment and purpose in their new lives.

WHAT IS PSALT NK?

PSALT is a Christian non-profit charity dedicated to increasing awareness of the crisis in North Korea and mobilizing people to learn, pray and participate in making a difference for those in need.

Sharing the love that Jesus first showed us and exhibiting the fruits of the very faith that we profess is core to our purpose. It is this love that drives us in commitment and understanding of our role and privilege to serve others.

Box of Hope: Card Writing

A short sample letter:

Dear Friend,

I know we’ve never met, but I hope this card finds you healthy and well during this Christmas season.

I don’t know what obstacles you’ve had to face in your life, but please don’t give up hope. I pray you find new strength each morning, unexpected encouragements from those around you, and blessings each day.

I hope that this Christmas season you will make new memories to cherish and new traditions to look forward to. I pray that you have a happy, healthy and very blessed New Year ahead.

Some Guidelines for Writing Cards:

• ü  A great activity you and your group can do together in advance is to write and prepare cards for North Korean refugees living in the United States. Heartfelt cards are deeply appreciated by the refugees and they have often shared how they have been moved by some of the thoughtful, beautiful cards received!

• ü  All cards MUST be unsealed and addressed ”Dear Friend” or left blank. Please try not to specify age/gender when writing.

• ü  Cards can be written in English or Korean

• ü  Young children are encouraged to participate! Teachers often prepare templates, stickers, etc. for them to glue and focus on decorating cards.

• ü  Briefly sharing personal experiences is okay, but avoid adding details or too much information and DO NOT include personal contact information.

• ü  DO NOT make political statements or negative comments about North Korea – most are lay-people who miss their home and hope to one day visit their friends and family when the country is free.

• ü  Many of the refugees identify as Christian and most of them had/have exposure to Christian community/support.
