[목양 칼럼] '탈' 기독교 시대를 맞이하면서...

탈(post) 기독교 시대라는 말은 이제 사람들에게 기독교라는 용어가 더 이상 매력적인, 호소력있는, 의미있는 용어가 아닌 시대를 맞이했다는 말입니다.  기독교적 가치관과 이념이 사람들에게 더 이상 관심을 끌기 어려운 시대가 되었다는 말입니다.  그래서 '예수 믿으세요'라는 말은 그렇게 사람들의 마음에 무게로 다가가기 어려운 시대가 되었다는 말입니다.

사실 그러합니다.  판데믹을 지나면서 미국에만도 1만여명의 목회자들이 사임을 하였고, 한인 교회는 1천개 정도가 문을 닫았다고 합니다.  통계가 말해주는 현실입니다.

왜 이렇게 되었을까요?  저는 크게 두가지 이유가 있다고 생각됩니다.  하나는, 시대적 영향입니다.  근대 이후의 인본주의에 의한 경험과 과학과 인간 논리의 한계에 빠짐으로 현대인이 추구하는 삶의 목적과 의미, 가치 등이 실존의 한계에 머물게 된 정점이 현대적 상황이라 생각됩니다.  

또 하나는 지금까지 행해왔던 기독교의 영향 때문입니다.  어쩌면 종교 개혁 때의 순수한, 본질의 기독교 대신에 다시 한번 더 종교 개혁이 일어나야 할 만큼 기독교는 신앙의 본질, 복음의 본질, 삼위일체 하나님의 본질 등을 인본주의, 자유주의 등의 영향 아래 상실해 왔다고 볼 수 있습니다.  기독교의 본질 대신 비본질이 외형화, 성공주의와 영합하여 그 자리를 잃어갔으니 당연히 탈 기독교의 상황이 된 것은 당연하다고 볼 수 있습니다.  만약 그렇게 안 되었다면 그것이 비정상이라 할 수 있을 만큼 본질을 잃은 측면이 기독교 안에 많습니다.

대안이 무엇일까요?

첫째는, 역사에 대한 반추와 응전(response)의 자세입니다.  이는 총체적으로 행해야 합니다.  철학사적 반성에 의한 근대 이후의 실존주의적 경향에 대한 철저한 반성과 존재에 입각한 유신론적 존재론에 입각한 현대 철학에 대한 반성과 그 대안의 정립(실은 이 부분은 쉽지 않음), 뿐만 아니라 이러한 철학사적 반성에 의한 신학사조에 대한 반성과 세계관에 대한 총제적인 반성과 재정립 등 방대하지만, 반드시 행해야 할 작업을 행해야 한다고 봅니다.

이는 기독교 인문학자들이 일반 은총의 영역인 일반 학문 안에서도 냉철한 자기 반성의 작업을 행해야 하고, 신앙인의 관점에서 현대적 사조에 대한 반성과 대안을 내 놓아야 할 것 입니다.  물론 이러한 작업은 시간이 많이 걸립니다.  그래서 100년 쯤 지나야 그 결과가 나타난다 할찌라도 행해야 합니다.

둘째는, 기독교인이 지금이라도 말씀의 본질을 찾고, 신앙과 복음의 본질을 추구하며, 함께 순수한 신앙 공동체를 만들어 가는 것입니다.   교회는 단순히 지역 교회만을 의미하지 않습니다.  개교회, 보편교회, 특수교회, 소그룹 교회, 개인이 성전이라 했으므로 개개인이 교회임을 기억하며 성전된 삶을 살아가는 등 등...

탈 기독교화는 실은 기독교인에 의해서 만들어진 결과라 생각됩니다.

이 말은 기독교가 지금이라도 철저하게 그 본질대로 살아갈 때, 하나님 나라 건설의 길은 분명히, 반드시 열리게 되리라 믿습니다.

매일 말씀과 기도의 자리로 나아오는 것 부터

그리고 소그룹을 통한 소금과 빛의 삶을 실천하는 것 부터

매 발걸음 걸어가 봅시다.

분명히 하나님 나라는 그 발걸음을 통해 이룩될 줄 믿습니다.

주님께서 함께 동행하실 것이기 때문입니다.

[Pastor's Column] As We Approach to the Era of 'Post' Christianity...

The term "post-Christian era" now signifies a time when the term Christianity is no longer attractive, compelling, or meaningful to people. It means that the values and ideologies of Christianity have become less appealing to people. Therefore, saying "Believe in Jesus" has become difficult to resonate with people's hearts in this era.

Indeed, that's the case. During the pandemic, more than 10,000 pastors resigned in the United States alone, and about a thousand Korean churches closed their doors. These are the realities conveyed by statistics.

Why did this happen? I believe there are two main reasons. Firstly, it's the influence of the times. Modern individuals have reached a point where the purpose, meaning, and values they seek in life, influenced by post-Enlightenment humanism and the limitations of experience, science, and human logic, have remained within the confines of existence.

Secondly, it's due to the impact of Christianity as it has been practiced until now. Christianity has deviated from its essence, the essence of faith, the essence of the Gospel, and the essence of the triune God, under the influence of humanism, liberalism, and other factors. The non-essential aspects of Christianity have taken precedence, combining with materialism and success-oriented ideologies, leading to the loss of its position. It's only natural that it has become a situation of post-Christianity. There are many aspects within Christianity that have lost their essence to the point where it could be considered abnormal if it were otherwise.

So, what are the alternatives?

Firstly, it's an attitude of reflecting on history and responding. This needs to be done comprehensively. It involves thorough reflection on the existentialist tendencies after modernity based on philosophical reflection, reflection on modern philosophy based on existentialist ontology rooted in existence (which is not easy), as well as reflection on theological trends based on this philosophical reflection, comprehensive reflection and reestablishment of worldview, etc. Although it is vast, it is work that must be done.

Christian humanists need to engage in rigorous self-reflection within general scholarship, and from the perspective of believers, they must reflect on and provide alternatives to modern trends. Of course, this kind of work takes a lot of time. Therefore, it needs to be done, even if it takes about a hundred years to see the results.

Secondly, it is for Christians to rediscover the essence of the Word, pursue the essence of faith and the Gospel, and together, create a pure community of faith. The church does not simply mean local churches. It includes house churches, universal churches, specialized churches, small group churches, and individuals who are temples, so each individual should remember that they are the church and live a sanctified life, etc.

The post-Christian movement is actually a result created by Christians.

This means that when Christianity lives according to its essence, I believe that the path to building the Kingdom of God will undoubtedly open.

Let us start by coming to the place of the Word and prayer every day,

And let us practice a life of salt and light through small groups,

Let us take every step forward.

I firmly believe that the Kingdom of God will be realized through those steps.

Because the Lord will accompany us.
