[한영 목양 칼럼] '주일신자'입니까? '매일신자'입니까?

판데믹으로 인해 신앙 공동체인 교회에 어려움도 있지만, 좋은 점도 있습니다.  당연히 어려운 점은 판데믹 이전 보다 현장 예배 드리러 나오는 숫자가 줄었다는 것입니다.  일반적으로 판데믹 이전과 비교할 때 70% 정도가 현장 예배로 복귀하고 있다고 통계를 통해 알 수 있습니다.  이는 우리가 평소 갖고 있는 신앙의 정체성, 진실성에 대해서 다시 한번 더 돌아보게 해 주는 점검 기회로 보아야 할 것입니다.

그러나 판데믹을 통해 '교회 (건물) 중심의 신앙 생활' '주일 중심'의 신앙 생활 '과중한 교회 집회 및 사역' 등이 '생활(삶) 중심'으로, '주중 중심'의 신앙 생활로, 그리고 '좀 더 삶과 연관되는 사역 등으로의 변화'등으로 발전 되고 있다는 점에서 긍정적인 측면도 있습니다.

판데믹 이후의 상황에 대해서 목회자들이나 직분자들이 부정적으로만 볼 수 있지만, 분별해서 볼 필요가 있습니다.  어쩌면 이 기회에 좀 더 본질적인, 성경적인 교회와 신앙 생활의 모습으로 성숙되게, 발전적으로 나아갈 수 있는 기회라 할 수 있습니다.

이렇게 되기 위해서는 목회자들이 너무 과거적인 기준과 문화로 교회 및 사역을 생각해서는 안됩니다.  판데믹 이전의 모든 프로그램을 다시 그대로 복원하는 것은 어쩌면 지금 상황에서 올바른 방향이 아닐 수도 있습니다.  또 너무 부정적으로 보거나, 자책하면서 상황을 대하기 보다는, 모든 상황, 모든 역사 속에 역사(work)하시는 하나님을 믿고, 의지하면서, 산 소망으로 나아가야 할 것입니다.

가장 중요한 것은 '주일 신자'에서 '매일 신자'로의 변화와 발전을 꾀하는 것이라 생각됩니다.  기복신앙에서, 이름뿐인 형식적인 신앙에서, 종교적 삶을 살아가는 모습에서 진실하면서도, 열매가 있는, 강하고, 바른 신앙인으로 나아가는 기회임을 생각할 때 더 적극적 자세를 판데믹이 막 끝난 마당에 가질 수 있다고 봅니다.  

그러기 위해서 몇가지 앞으로 가져야 할 자세와 방향을 정리해 보았습니다.

첫째, 본질적인 것은 더욱 강력하게 치중해야 합니다. 

십자가를 통한 유일한 구원의 길, 삼위일체 하나님, 말씀과 기도의 중요성 등 신앙의 본질은 어떤 시대, 어떤 상황을 막론하고 가장 중요합니다.  이럴 때 더 본질을 강조해야 합니다. 

둘째, 교회 집회와 교육, 사역등의 규모와 종류, 장소 등을 재분재, 재정립해야 합니다.

그동안 너무 교회 중심, 주일 중심의 신앙 생활을 했던 것을 이제는 좀 더 사회속으로, 생활 속으로 그 방향을 보완해야 할 필요가 있음을 깨달아야 합니다.  미국에 유학, 주재원, 방문 교수 등으로 오시는 많은 분들 중에서 미국에 있는 한인 교회에 다니기는 하지만, 한국에서처럼 활발하게 직분자로서, 봉사 사역 등을 하지 않는 경우를 볼 때가 많습니다.  그 분들 중 많은 분들이 한국에서 너무 봉사와 사역에 지쳤다는 것입니다.

봉사와 사역은 신앙의 본질로 인한 기쁨에서 발현되어야 합니다.  열매로 실천되어야 합니다.  물론 섬김과 사역을 통해서 배우는 경우도 있지만, 그러한 이유가 봉사와 사역의 목적이 되어서는 안됩니다.  하나님과의 관계, 예배의 기쁨, 신앙의 본질 확인, 성장과 성숙 등으로 인해서 갖게 된 기쁨과 소명 등을 통해서 섬김과 사역이 진행될 때 후유증 없는 사역이 될 것입니다.

지금은 그런 교회의 비정상적 사역의 상황을 목회자들에게는 조금 힘 들더라도 모든 직분자들과 성도님들이 함께 이 부분을 공감하면서 같이 노력해야 할 것입니다.  무리하지 않지만, 최선을 다하는 사역이 될 때, 사역으로 인한 후유증 대신에 기쁨과 감사가 충만해서 더 귀한 사역으로 헌신되는 사역의 선순환이 이루어지게 될 것입니다.  이러한 자세가 진정한 미셔널 교회/성도의 삶이라 믿습니다.

셋째, 일시적, 지식적 차원의 신앙에서 생활적, 전인적 신앙인으로 변화되어야 합니다. 

과거에는 교회와 세상, 주일과 주중 등이 구분이 아니라, 분리가 되었습니다.  판데믹이 끝나도 재택근무하는 분들도 많이 계시고, 또 교회 성경공부 등도 '줌'등으로 하는 경우도 많이 생겼습니다.  이는 삶의 현장이 바로 예배와 하나님 임재의 처소가 됨을 의미합니다.  이것이 정상입니다.  그동안 너무 교회와 세상이 분리가 된 이분법적 신앙관이 비정상적으로 한국 교회에 성행했던 것이 사실입니다.

이제 그 본래의 사명, 즉 이 세상안에서 소금과 빛의 사명을 다하는 사명을 회복해야 합니다.

위의 세가지 외에도 많을 것입니다.

그러나 최소한 이 세가지 관점을 이제 함께 공감하면서 노력할 때, 그러한 교회의 성도는

'주일신자'에서 '매일신자'가 될 것입니다.

'불신자' 보다는 '주일신자'가 낫지만, 한국 교회는 그동안 너무나 '주일신자'양산에 힘을 쏟았습니다.

이제 판데믹의 기간을 무려 3년 반 정도를 주신 하나님의 크신 뜻을 다 알지는 못하지만,

한가지 아는 것은 이러한 과정과 변화를 통해 교회가 '매일성도' '매일신자'를 양성할 수 있는 귀한 기회라는 사실을 잊지 않았으면 좋겠습니다.

저부터 진지하게 이 주제를 놓고 기도하며, 동역 사역자들과 함께 나누고, 그리고 목표로 삼기를 원합니다.

'주일신자'에서 '매일신자'로 되기를...

[Kor-Eng Pastoral Column] Are You a 'Sunday Christian' or a 'Everyday Christian'?

Due to the pandemic, there have been difficulties within the faith community of the church, but there are also positive aspects. Naturally, one challenging aspect is that the number of people attending on-site worship has decreased compared to before the pandemic. Statistics show that around 70% of the usual attendees have returned to on-site worship in comparison to the pre-pandemic period. This provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the authenticity and truthfulness of our faith that we normally hold dear.

However, amidst the pandemic, there are also positive aspects where faith life is transitioning from being 'church-centered' to 'life-centered,' moving from being 'Sunday-centered' to 'weekday-centered,' and shifting towards ministries and activities that are more relevant to daily life.

Looking at the post-pandemic situation, pastors and church workers may perceive it negatively, but it is essential to discern the opportunities it presents. Perhaps this could be a chance for the church and faith life to mature and progress towards a more essential and biblical form.

To achieve this, pastors must not think of the church and ministry through outdated standards and cultural lenses. Simply restoring all the pre-pandemic programs may not be the right direction in the current situation. Instead, it's important to trust and rely on God, who works in all circumstances and histories, and move forward with hope and a vision for a more mature, fruitful, strong, and upright faith.

The most important goal is to seek transformation and growth from 'Sunday Believers' to 'Daily Believers.' This means moving away from a fluctuating faith, superficial faith, and religious routine and progressing towards a genuine, fruitful, and steadfast faith. This positive attitude can be embraced after the pandemic comes to an end.

To accomplish this, there are several attitudes and directions to consider:

Firstly, we should emphasize the essence more strongly. The essence of faith, such as salvation through the cross, the triune God, and the importance of the Word and prayer, remains paramount regardless of the era or circumstances. At times like this, we need to emphasize these core aspects.

Secondly, the size, type, and location of church gatherings, education, and ministry should be reconsidered and restructured. We need to recognize the need to complement church-centered and Sunday-centered faith life with a more active presence in society and daily life. Many individuals who attend Korean churches in the United States, whether as students, residents, or visiting professors, often do not engage in active service and ministry like they did in Korea. Many of them may have become exhausted from excessive service and ministry.

Service and ministry should arise from the joy of faith and bear fruit. While serving and ministering can be a means of learning, it should not become the sole purpose of service and ministry. When service and ministry flow from our relationship with God, the joy of worship, the confirmation of faith's essence, growth, and maturity, they will be fulfilling and free from negative consequences.

Although pastors may find it challenging to navigate the abnormal circumstances of such ministry, it requires collective effort from all church workers and members, showing empathy towards each other. When we pursue service with our best efforts but not excessively, we will experience joy and gratitude instead of negative consequences, and this will lead to a virtuous cycle of dedicated service. I believe this attitude represents the true missional life of the church and its members.

Thirdly, we need to transform our faith from being temporary and intellectual to becoming practical and holistic. In the past, the church and the world, Sundays, and weekdays were seen as distinct and separate entities. Even after the pandemic, many continue to work remotely, and Bible study and church gatherings are often conducted online through platforms like 'Zoom.' This means that life's context can be a place of worship and God's presence. This is normal. The dichotomous view of faith that separated the church from the world in the past was not normal.

Now we must recover our original mission, which is to fulfill the mission of salt and light within this world.

In addition to these three perspectives, there may be many more to consider.

However, at the very least, when we collectively empathize and make efforts to pursue these three attitudes, the saints of the church will evolve from 'Sunday Believers' to 'Daily Believers.'

Being a 'Sunday Believer' is better than being a non-believer, but the Korean church has invested too much in producing 'Sunday Believers.' Now, even though we may not fully understand God's great purpose in giving us the pandemic, let us not forget that it presents us with a precious opportunity to cultivate 'Daily Believers.'

Starting from myself, I earnestly pray and hope to share this topic with fellow workers and make it a goal.

Let us strive to become 'Daily Believers' from 'Sunday Believers'...
