Washtenaw County Continuum of Care will be conducting its annual Point-in-Time Count of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness on the evening of Wednesday, January 31, 2024, from 10  pm to 2am.

During the count, volunteers will canvas the county to identify anyone experiencing unsheltered homelessness. Volunteers will conduct a brief survey with anyone they encounter, and will be able to provide supplies and food for people staying outside. The data gathered from the surveys will be reported to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and will be used to inform planning efforts at the local, state, and federal levels.

We are currently recruiting volunteers to conduct the count. Please see below about what volunteers can expect.

Here is an important volunteer opportunity available. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) conducts the nation-wide annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of people experiencing homelessness on the evening of 1/31/24 between 10 pm and 2 am. The basic idea is to measure how many individuals are unsheltered in the US on a given day and their characteristics and needs. The PIT count is one of the most important and trustworthy pieces of information in the homeless service field. HUD uses PIT count to assess the regional homeless service needs and progress and allocate funding.

The annual PIT count could be a useful way for the Hope Church members to learn more about homelessness issues within a relatively safer environment. The volunteers will join a team of seasoned practitioners and administrators to walk around some sections of Washtenaw County, conduct quick interviews with people experiencing homelessness, and distribute basic supplies.
