[매일 시편 한 편…] 오늘은 시편 8편: 피조의 세계를 정복하고 다스려야 할 권리와 책임

“Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 주의 손으로 만드신 것을 다스리게 하시고 만물을 그 발 아래 두셨으니”(6)

시편 8편은 ‘창조시’로서 하나님께서 창조하신 창조 사역에 대한 찬양, 그리고 그 창조를 통해 인간에게 부여된 ‘정복하고 다스리는’ 권리와 책임에 관한 시입니다.  그래서 ‘찬양시’로도 불리울 수 있지만, 저는 8편의 내용을 ‘사명시’ 혹은 ‘헌신시’라고도 부를 수 있다고 생각합니다.

하나님께서 창조하신 우주 만물, 특히 자연은 너무나 아릅답고, 질서와 규칙이 있기에 하나님의 놀라운 능력을 영광으로 드러냅니다(1). 우리는 맘껏 하나님이 만드신 자연을 보며 즐김과 동시에, 그 작품의 작자이신 하나님을 찬양해야 합니다.

하늘과 달과 별(3), 자연 세계의 모든 동물들과 지형들(7-8) 등은 너무나 아름답습니다. 이러한 자연 속에 하나님은 놀라운 가능성을 담아 두시고, 정복하고 다스리도록 명령하셨습니다(6). 

그래서 하나님의 형상을 닮은 사람은 무한한 가능성을 가진 자연을 잘 개발하고, 다스리고, 보존하고, 하나님의 창조 질서 대로 잘 유지 되도록 관리해야 할 특권과 의무가 있는 존재입니다.  자연을 함부로 사용하거나 훼손해서도 안되며, 너무 지나친 남용을 통해 자연을 통한 공급이 고갈되지 않도록 무분별하거나, 오남용 해서는 안될 것입니다.  이러한 선한 관리인, 개발인의 자세와 삶 또한 몸으로 드리는 찬양입니다.

뿐만 아니라 이러한 광대한 하나님을 대적하는 자들(마귀, 그리고 죄인들)이 하나님의 형상을 가진 인간 본연의 임무를 넘어서서 하나님의 영역을 침범하고, 자신들이 하나님의 지위를 차지하려고 할 때(2), 하나님 만을 믿고 의지하는 겸손함으로 영적 반항을 잠재워야 할 것입니다(2).  그런 면에서 반 창조 질서의 입장을 가진 자들을 향해 경고와 올바른 계도를 행함 또한 창조주 하나님을 향한 귀한 찬양의 자세입니다.

이러한 정복과 다스림의 특권과 의무를 잘 감당함으로 하나님께서 창조하신 너무나 아름다운 자연과 사회를 더욱 잘 보존하고, 개발하는 몸의 찬양자, 삶의 찬양자가 되시기를 바랍니다.

그렇습니다.  우리는 입술로 뿐만 아니라, 우리의 삶과 몸으로 맘껏 찬양 드릴 수 있습니다.

[Every day, one Psalm…] Today's Psalm is Psalm 8: The Right and Responsibility to Conquer and Rule the World of Creation

"You made him to have dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet: what your hand has created, making him ruler over all things." (6)

Psalm 8 is a praise for the work of creation that God has done, and it speaks about the right and responsibility given to humans to 'conquer and rule' through the act of creation. Therefore, it can be called a 'praise Psalm,' but I also think the content of Psalm 8 can be referred to as a 'mission Psalm' or a 'dedication Psalm.'

The universe and all creation that God has made, especially nature, are so marvelous, revealing the incredible power of God in the order and rules that exist (1). As we enjoy God's creation, we should also praise the Creator, who is the author of this work.

The heavens, the moon, the stars (3), all the animals and landscapes of the natural world (7-8) are incredibly beautiful. In this nature, God has placed amazing possibilities and commanded us to conquer and rule (6).

Therefore, humans, who are created in the image of God, have the privilege and obligation to wisely develop, rule, preserve, and manage the infinite possibilities within nature and maintain it in accordance with God's order of creation. It is a privilege and duty to be good stewards, developers, and caretakers. Nature should not be used or damaged recklessly, and it should not be depleted through excessive misuse. Such responsible management and a life of praise are offerings to God.

Furthermore, when those who oppose the vast God (the devil and sinners) go beyond the natural mission of humans created in the image of God and trespass into God's domain, trying to assume God's position (2), we must suppress spiritual rebellion with humility, trusting only in God. In this aspect, warning and providing proper guidance to those who hold a position against the order of creation are also valuable acts of praise towards the Creator God.

By handling the privilege and duty of conquest and rule well, we hope that God will be praised even more through the better preservation and development of the incredibly beautiful nature and society that He created.

Yes, we can praise not only with our lips but also with our lives and bodies.
