[본문] 에베소서 Eph. 2:1-10

1. 그는 허물과 죄로 죽었던 너희를 살리셨도다

2. 그 때에 너희는 그 가운데서 행하여 이 세상 풍조를 따르고 공중의 권세 잡은 자를 따랐으니 곧 지금 불순종의 아들들 가운데서 역사하는 영이라

3. 전에는 우리도 다 그 가운데서 우리 육체의 욕심을 따라 지내며 육체와 마음의 원하는 것을 하여 다른 이들과 같이 본질상 진노의 자녀이었더니

4. 긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신 그 큰 사랑을 인하여

5. 허물로 죽은 우리를 그리스도와 함께 살리셨고 （너희는 은혜로 구원을 받은 것이라）

6. 또 함께 일으키사 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉히시니

7. 이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 자비하심으로써 그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을 오는 여러 세대에 나타내려 하심이라

8. 너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라

9. 행위에서 난 것이 아니니 이는 누구든지 자랑하지 못하게 함이라

10. 우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라

1. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

2. in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

3. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

4. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

5. made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.

6. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

7. in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

8. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--

9. not by works, so that no one can boast.

10. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

 

1. 제가 질문을 하나 드리겠습니다.  “나는 누구입니까?”(Who am I?) Let me ask you a question. “Who are you?”

2. 조금 어려우면 이렇게 질문 드릴 수 있습니다.  “당신의 정체성은 어떤 것입니까?” (What is your identity?) (더 어렵나요? ^^) Let me rephrase it and ask you again. “What is your identity?” 

3. 예배 드리러 오신 많은 분들이 이렇게 대답하셨을 것입니다. Many of you might have answered like this. 

4. “네. 저는 크리스챤입니다”. “네. 저는 신앙인입니다” “I am a Christian,” or “I am a believer.” 

5. 크리스챤이라는 말은 ‘그리스도를 따르는 자들’이라는 말이고, 신앙인이라는 말은 ‘믿음을 가지고 사는 자들’이라는 말입니다. Christians are referred to as those who follow the Christ, and believers as those who live by faith.

6. 저 자신도 목사이기전에 먼저 저 자신의 정체성을 ‘신앙인’으로, ‘크리스챤’으로 말씀 드림이 맞다고 생각합니다. I myself think it is right to regard myself as a Christian and believer even before being identified as a pastor. 

 

7. 그런데 문제는 저의 실제 삶에서 ‘그리스도를 따르는 삶’ 혹은 ‘믿음을 갖고 사는 삶’이냐가 문제라는 말입니다. However, what is more important is to ask whether I live a “life following Christ” or “a life living by faith” in my life.

8. 그리스도를 따른다고 하면서 실제로는 다른 것을 추구하고 살거나, 믿음을 갖고 산다고 하면서 실제로는 믿음의 본질에 맞지 않는 삶을 살아온 경우가 많기 때문입니다. Because there are many times when I claim to be a Christian but pursue something else and also when I claim to live by faith but end up living a life that does not align with the essence of faith.

9. 예를 들어 ‘제가 설정해 놓은 목표가 달성되는 것을 믿는 믿음’으로 살거나, 그리스도 대신에 ‘나 자신을 더 드러내거나 주장’하며 살지 않았는가 싶습니다. For example, I might have lived believing in achieving my own goals, or I may have lived elevating myself over Christ. 

10. 그러다 보니 제가 정해 놓은 목표가 저의 삶의 기준점이 되었고, 달성되면 기쁘고, 그렇지 않으면 마음이 불편하거나, 걱정을 하게 되는 그런 상황을 많이 겪게 되는 저 자신을 보게 됩니다. As a result, my goals became the standard of my life, and I found myself in many situations where I felt happy when I accomplished the goals and depressed or worried when I failed.  

 

11. 그러면서 저 자신에게 든 의문은… ‘믿는다는 것’은 어떤 것인가? ‘믿음의 올바른 정의는 어떤 것인가?’ 라는 질문이 들기 시작했습니다. The questions that arose in me are like… “What does it mean to believe?” or “What is the correction definition of faith?”

12. 그리고 ‘나는 제대로 믿음을 가지고 사는 크리스챤인가?’라는 질문을 진지하게 하게 되었습니다. And I seriously began to ask myself, “Am I a Christian who lives with right faith?”

13. ‘어떻게 목사가 믿음 하나도 제대로 이해하지 못하고, 살아왔단 말인가…?’라고 저에게 질문하실 수도 있겠습니다. You might wonder, “How could a pastor have lived his life without properly understanding even faith.

14. 그러나 머리로는 이해하지만 실제 삶에서 믿음 생활을 실제로, 건강하게 살아가고 있는가 … 라는 점을 돌아볼 때 부족함이 늘 있음을 고백하게 됩니다(예: 특히 사건, 사고 등 만날때) I I confess that I always fall short of living by faith in a healthy way in my life. 

15. 그래서 ‘믿음에 대한 올바른 이해와 점검’은 매우 중요하기에 우리 사랑하는 성도님들과 이 주제를 함께 살펴보기를 원합니다. Therefore, a “right understanding of faith” is such an important topic, and so let me explore it together with you. 

 

16. 성경에도 이러한 잘못된 믿음의 예들이 많이 나옵니다.  그 중의 한 예가 사마리아 성에 사는 마술사 시몬입니다. There are many examples of such misguided faith in the Bible. One example is Simon the magician in the city of Samaria.

17. 그는 빌립 집사님이 전하는 복음을 듣고, 자신도 믿기를 원한다고 하면서 세례까지 받게 됩니다(행 8:12-13). He heard the gospel preached by Philip and wanted to believe and even received baptism. (Acts 8:12-13)

18. 그러나 베드로와 요한 사도가 성령의 역사하심을 전하게 되자, 자신도 그 성령의 역사하심을 받고져 돈을 주고 그것을 살려고 합니다(행 8:18). But, when Peter and John were preaching the work of the Holy Spirit, Simon tried to buy that power with money, wanting to receive the work of the Spirit himself. (Acts 8:18)

19. 그런 마술사 시몬을 향하여 베드로는 ‘하나님 앞에서 마음이 바르지 못한 자’(행 8:21)라고 책망합니다.  그리고 ‘네 은과 함께 망할지어다’(행 8:20)라고 강하게 책망합니다. To Simon the magician, Peter said, “Your heart is not right before God,” and sternly rebuked him, saying “May your money perish with you.” (Acts 8:21, 20)

20. 그렇습니다.  마술사 시몬은 자신이 믿는다고 생각했던 것도, 심지어 세례를 받은 것도 모두 자신에게 성령의 역사와 같은 놀라운 능력, 그로 인한 사람들의 관심과 존중, 그로 인한 마술사로서의 성공적인 삶을 기대했던 것입니다. Simon expected that what he believed in and that getting baptized would bring him the amazing power like that of the Holy Spirit, along with attention and respect from others and a successful life as a magician. 

21. 그가 믿었던 것은 하나님이 아니라, 자신의 능력, 명예, 영광, 성공이었던 것입니다. What he trusted in was not God but his own power, honor, glory, and success. 

22. 어쩌면 마술사 시몬의 얘기는 그 만의 얘기가 아니라, 저의 삶에서도 종종 갖게 되는 모습이 아닌가 싶습니다. Perhaps, the story of Simon is not just his own, but also reflects my own life. 

23. 그래서 올바른 믿음에 대해서 다시 한번 더 바르게 정립함이 꼭 필요하다고 믿습니다. It is therefore necessary to properly establish right faith. 

 

24. 저희가 올해 교회 비전 재 정립을 행하면서 목회자들이 그 기본이 되는 시리즈 설교를 행하고 있습니다. This new year, as part of reestablishing the church vision, our pastors have been presenting a series of sermons based on its fundamentals. 

25. 저의 경우는 종교개혁자들이 들고 선포했던 다섯가지 표어를 순서대로 진행하고 있습니다. As for me, I have been sharing the Five Slogans of the Reformation one by one. 

26. 이 5대 표어의 순서는 여러가지 종류가 있습니다.  그러나 저는 이 순서가 가장 적절하다고 생각합니다. There are various sequences for these five slogans, but I believe this sequence is most appropriate. 

27. [표] 왜냐하면 이 속에 ‘믿음’에 대한 올바른 가르침과 이해가 있기 때문입니다. Because it contains the correct teaching and understanding about “faith.”

28. [표] 성경, 그리스도, 은혜, 그리고 그 다음이 바로 ‘믿음’입니다(설명 첨가). The Bible, Christ, grace, and then “faith.”

29. [표] 즉, 믿음은 바로 은혜에 기초한 것이고, 그 은혜를 온전히 이해할 때 믿음에 대해서도 바른 자세를 갖게 된다는 것입니다. Faith is based on grace, and when this grace is fully understood, we will have the correct attitude towards faith.  

30. 오늘 읽은 본문에서도 ‘죽었던(1)’ ‘본질상 진노의 자녀(3)’, ‘허물로 죽은(5)’ 등과 같은 ‘죽음’의 상황과 그 반대되는 ‘은혜로 살리심’(5, 7, 8)이라는 두 대비를 강하게 설명합니다. Today’s text also strongly contrasts the state of “death” such as “dead in transgressions” (1), “by nature objects of wrath” (3), and “dead in your sins” (5), with the state of being “made alive by grace.” (5, 7, 8)

31. 즉 ‘철저한 죽음’의 상황에서 ‘영원한 생명의 삶’으로 인도함 받는 것이 바로 ‘은혜’임을 성경은 강하게 설명합니다. It emphasizes that “grace” is being led from “utter death” to “eternal life.” 

32. 이 은혜는 이 세상의 그 어떤 피조물도 행할 수 없는 것입니다. This grace is something that no creature in this world can perform. 

33. 왜냐하면 그 어떤 능력의 피조물도 자신의 죄를 이길 수도 없고, 갚을 수도 없는 죄인이고, 한계있는 존재이기 때문입니다. No powerful creatures can overcome or repay their sin because they are sinful and limited. 

34. 오직 창조주, 영원하신 하나님께서 그 죄값을 치뤄주실 때, 비로소 영원한 죽음에서, 영원한 생명으로 살게 되는 것이고, 그 값은 바로 예수 그리스도의 보혈로만 가능하다는 것입니다. Only God the Creator can pay for our sins, and only through the blood of Jesus Christ can we be moved from eternal death to eternal life. 

35. 이것을 은혜라고 합니다.  This is grace, we say.

36. 그리고 이 은혜를 행하여 주신 하나님, 그리스도, 성령님을 믿는 것을 믿음이라고 하는 것입니다. And faith is believing in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. 

37. 어떤 인간도 이러한 은혜를 주지 못하는 것입니다.  No human being can ever give this kind of grace. 

38. 이 은혜는 돈 주고 살 수 없을 만큼 값비싼 것이기에… 그래서 우리에게 거저 주셔야만 하는 것이기에 이를 선물(karis), 즉 은혜라고 하는 것입니다. Since this grace is too precious to be bought with money, it must be given freely to us; this is called a gift, karis, that is, grace. 

 

39. 그러면 믿음은 무엇일까요?  ‘그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아’라고 표현 되었습니다. What is faith then? It is written, “by grace through faith.” 

40. 즉, (구원)믿음은 ‘은혜’가 본질이고, 그 기초이며, 그 은혜에 대해 신앙인이 갖는 자세가 믿음이라는 말입니다. The essence of faith is “grace, and it is based on grace. Faith is the attitude that believers have towards this grace. 

41. 이는 은혜라는 가장 값진, 풍성한, 능력의 삶을 인도함 받기 위해서, 반드시 은혜가 먼저 있어야 하고(존재), 그리고 그 은혜를 향한 우리의 실천적 자세가 있어야 한다는 말입니다. For us to be guided by such a valuable, abundant, and powerful grace, grace must first come, followed by our practical, faith-full attitude towards grace.  

42. (제가 이렇게 설명드립니다. 크라잉 룸 가리키며).  여기 한 살도 안 된 아기가 있습니다.  그에게 어머니는 전부입니다.  은혜입니다.  능력입니다.  모든 것이 다 공급됩니다.  이미 계신 어머니가 아기 (생존)존재의 근원입니다. There’s a baby not even a year old. To him, his mother is everything. She is grace. She is power. She provides. She is there for him. 

43. 그러나 아기가 해야 할 일이 있습니다.  그것은 다른 존재가 아니라, 그 어머니를 향하여, 어머니께로 자신이 할 수 있는 최대의 의지(기어가든지), 영접(안아 달라고 하든지), 신뢰를 해야 한다는 것입니다. But something needs to be done on the baby’s part. He needs to show the utmost will (by crawling, for instance), acceptance (asking to be hugged), and trust towards his mother. 

44. 그러면 어머니의 인도와 공급과 보호를 받을 수 있습니다. Then he can receive guidance, provision, and protection from his mother. 

45. 그렇게 행할 때 믿음의 놀라운 능력, 즉 아기의 힘이 아니라, 어머니의 힘, 사랑, 능력, 뜻 등을 공급받는 다는 말입니다. By doing so, he can receive not his own power but such an amazing power of faith, that is, his mother’s strength, love, power, and will. 

46. 이것을 에베소서 2장 10절에 ‘우리는 그의 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받았다’라고 표현합니다. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” 

47. 즉, 은혜를 의지하는 믿음은 바로 이 세상에서 나의 잘난 것을 드러내고, 자랑하는 것이 아니라, 내 안에 놀라게 역사하시는 하나님의 은혜를 드러내는 일, 그 선한일을 하게 된다는 것입니다(겸손, 감사, 사랑, 순수 등).  Therefore, faith relying on grace is not about showing off or boasting about our own achievements in this world but revealing the grace of God working wonderfully within us, doing those good works. 

 

48. 저는 저희 소망 교회를 보면서 다 감사하게 생각하지만, 그 중의 하나가 바로 ‘지정헌금’입니다.  Among many things I am thankful for in our church, one is the “designated offering.”

49. 이는 저희 교회를 위한 것도 아니고, 그 지정된 대상 혹은 사역지를 위해 100% 전달되는 것을 말합니다. It is not for our church but is 100% delivered to the designated recipients or mission fields. 

50. 그런데 그 금액이 우리 교회 규모를 생각할 때, 그 비율이 상당이 많음을 깨닫게 됩니다. The amount is quite significant considering the size of our church. 

51. 그것이 바로 은혜를 믿고, 의지할 때, 그 은혜의 근거이신 하나님의 은혜를 함께 나누는 그런 선한일을 하게 되는 것을 의미합니다. This is made possible by believing in and relying on grace, and we engage in good works of sharing God’s grace. 

52. 믿음은 내가 원하는 것을 믿는 것이 아니라, 하나님을 믿는 것, 하나님만이 하시는 일인 은혜를 의지하는 것을 말합니다. Faith is not believing in what I want but in God, relying on the grace that only God can provide. 

53. 그럴 때 우리는 선한 일, 즉 놀라운 일을 행할 수 있습니다. Then we can do good works, amazing and wonderful works. 

54. 나를 드러내지 않게 되고, 내가 할 수 있는 일 보다 더 큰 일을 하게 됩니다. We become humble not by showing off ourselves, and we can even do greater things than we could on our own. 

55. 왜냐하면 하나님의 능력을 바라보게 되기 때문입니다. Because it makes us look to God’s power. 

 

56. ‘믿음의 주요 온전케 하신 이인 예수를 바라보자(히 12:2)’라고 말씀합니다(설명). “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).

57. ‘영접하는 자, 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자에게 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨다(요 1:12)’고 합니다(설명). “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

58. ‘내가 만일 내 입으로 예수를 주로 시인하며 또 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 것을 내 마음에 믿으면… ‘(롬 10:9-10)이라고 되어 있습니다(설명). “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9-10)

59. 그러므로 ‘믿음은 들음에서 나며 들음은 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암았느니라(롬 10:17)’고 말씀합니다(설명). Therefore, “faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17).

60. 믿음은 나의 생각, 소원, 희망 등과 같은 나의 신념을 ‘믿음’이라고 치장된 종교적 행위속에 집어넣는 것이 아닙니다. Faith is not about putting our beliefs such as ideas, desires, and hopes into a religious act disguised as “faith.” 

61. 믿음은 하나님을 바라보는 것입니다(예: 엄마를 바라보는 아기) Faith is looking to God (like a baby looking to his mother.).

62. 하나님을 바라볼 때 비로소 믿음은 하나님에 의해서, 하나님 주시는 능력으로 생명력있게 되는 것입니다. When we look to God, faith becomes alive by God’s presence and power. 

63. ‘대저 하나님께로 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이긴 이김은 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라(요일 5:4)’ “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4).

64. 그렇습니다.  참된 믿음으로 신앙인은 이 땅에서 하나님의 은혜로 다가가는 참된 승리하는 신앙인이 되는 것입니다. Indeed! With true faith, believers become victorious through God’s grace on this earth.

65. 즉 껄끄러운 어떤 관계 안에서도, 그 모든 인간의 한계를 다 덮고, 이끌 수 있는 주님의 은혜로 다가가게 되는 그 선한 일(그 영혼 뒤에, 위에 계시는 하나님 바라보기)을 행하게 된다는 말입니다. Even in difficult relationships and beyond all human limitations, we are led to do good works by the grace of God. 

66. (어떤 상황이라도… 파도 위에 계시는 하나님, 마르다 마리아 등)

67. 이렇게 참된 하나님의 능력으로 삶에서 진정한 선한 일을 행할 수 있는 자들이 되기를 원합니다. I pray that we all can genuinely do good works in our lives through the power of God. 

 

68. 그러기 위해서 믿음은 삶의 현장에서 매 순간 가장 중요한 우선 순위로 작동해야 합니다. To the end, faith must operate as the most important priority in every moment of our lives. 

69. 그래서 사도 바울은 가장 중요한 교리서에 해당하는 로마서를 기록하면서 그 주제를 표현하는 가장 핵심 표현으로 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. Apostle Paul, writing the Book of Romans, which is considered the most important doctrinal epistle, declares: 

70. ‘내가 복음을 부끄러워하지 아니하노니 이 복음은 모든 믿는 자에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 능력’(롬 1:16)이라고 했습니다. “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16a).

71. 그리고 이 ‘복음에는 하나님의 의가 나타나서 믿음으로 믿음에 이르게 된다’라고 표현합니다.  He continues in verse 17, “In this gospel, ‘the righteousness of God is revealed---a righteousness that is by faith from first to last.” 

72. ‘믿음으로 믿음에 이르게 된다’(by faith from first to last)라는 말이 어떤 의미일까요? What does it mean by the phrase, “by faith from first to last”?

73. 이는 믿음이 명사형이 아니라, 동사형, 그것도 현재 진행형임을 의미합니다. It means faith is not a noun but a verb in the present continuous tense. 

74. 그렇습니다. 믿음은 삶의 매 순간, 어떤 상황을 만나더라도 (가짜 믿음에 의한) 나의 의지나, 나의 욕심이 아니라, 하나님만을 바라보고 의지하는 참 믿음의 자세와 삶으로 살아가는 삶을 말합니다. Faith is living every moment, in any circumstances, by looking to and relying on God alone, not by our own will or desires. 

75. 그렇게 현재 진행형으로 살아가실 때, 성도는 믿음의 주가 되시는 예수 그리스도의 은혜로 사람들에게 다가가는, 즉 이 땅에서 선한 일을 행하며 살게 될 줄 믿습니다. When we live by faith in such a present continuous tense, by the grace of Jesus Christ, the Lord of faith, we believers can reach out to people and do good works in this world.

77. [성찬식] 주님의 떡과 잔은 은혜, 선물입니다.  이 은혜를 이 시간뿐만 아니라, 삶의 식사를 하실 때 마다 주님의 은혜, 선물을 보고, 의지하고, 영접하겠습니다. The Lord’s bread and cup are grace, a gift. Not only in this time but always think of God’s grace and gift, rely on him, and receive his grace. 

78. 매 순간 믿음의 현재 진행형으로 살겠습니다.  그런 마음으로 떡과 잔을 받겠습니다.  Let us live our faith out in the present continuous tense. Let us now receive his bread and cup. 

79. [기도] 나의 죄성에 의한 나의 욕심 성취를 바라는 종교적 신념의 삶이 아니라, 주님의 은혜를 바라고 의지함으로, 주님의 뜻이 나의 삶에 이루어지게 되는 그런 참된 믿음 생활을 날마다, 매 순간 하게 하옵소서! Help us not serve you out of our selfish desires but only seek your face and grace which allow us to live by true faith and have your will fulfilled in every moment and day of our lives.  

80. [찬양] 이제 이 찬양을 부르며 헌신합시다.  ‘시선’-우리가 해야 할 일은 늘 은혜의 주 되시는 예수 그리스도께 시선을 두는 것입니다. Let us now sing this song and dedicate ourselves to God. Our job is to always set our eyes on Jesus Christ.
