기적을 믿으십니까?

“아브라함이 엎드려 웃으며 마음속으로 이르되 백 세 된 사람이 어찌 자식을 낳을까 사라는 구십 세니 어찌 출산하리요 하고”(창세기 17:17)

백 세 된 아브라함, 구십 세 된 사라가 자녀를 낳는다는 것은 분명 아브라함에게는 기적이었습니다.  그래서 그는 자신의 아내가 아기를 낳을 것이라는 하나님의 말씀을 들으며 ‘웃었습니다’.  이 웃음은 자기 자신을 향해서는 허탈한, 하나님을 향해서는 조소의 웃음이었을 것입니다.  차마 크게 소리 내지 못한 푸념의 웃음이었을 것입니다.

아브라함이 이렇게 기적을 못 받아 들인 이유는 무엇일까요?  

피조물 인간 중심의 생각으로 창조주 하나님의 말씀을 들었기 때문입니다.  자기 경험 위주의 관점에서 하나님의 능력을 제한했기 때문입니다.  논리로 초논리를 거부하는 논리 중심의 사고, 즉 논리주의에 빠졌기 때문입니다.

그러나 하나님은 피조 세계 위에 계시는 창조주 이십니다.  인간이 존재하시기도 전에 스스로 계셨던 분이십니다.  무에서 유를 창조하신 분이십니다.  인간의 과학적 논리도 중요하지만, 그 과학적 논리로 아직 설명하지 못하는 초논리의 영역도 주관하시는 분이십니다.  

아브라함은 하나님을 자신의 레벨, 즉 피조물 인간의 레벨로 보았던 것입니다.  그래서 하나님께서 하실 수 있는 초논리의 레벨, 창조의 레벨, 기적의 레벨, 전능한 신의 레벨의 얘기를 들으며 (비)웃었던 것입니다.

동일하게 우리는 아브라함처럼 하나님을 대할 수 있습니다.  하나님을 인간의 레벨로 끌어내려서 보려는 실수를 저지릅니다.  그러나 창조의 문제, 죄 해결의 문제, 시간과 공간의 한계 속에 갇힌 인간에게 영생의 삶으로 인도하는 것은 결코 피조물이 할 수 있는 영역이 아닙니다.  

그러나 하나님은 약속하셨습니다.  무에서 유를 창조하신 하나님께서 죄 문제를 해결해 주시고, 영생의 삶으로 인도하신다고 약속하셨고, 실제로 하나님이 인간으로 오심으로 실천하셨습니다.  

아브라함은 그 과정의 도구로 사용된 자(믿음의 조상)입니다.  그 도구가 가져야 할 자세는 바로 믿음입니다.  하나님을 믿을 때, 비로소 하나님의 역사하심은 질서도 사용하시고, 논리와 상식도 사용하시며, 그리고 하나님 나라 건설을 위하여 초논리와 기적도 사용하십니다.

그래서 우리는 하나님께서 말씀하실 때 웃어서는 안됩니다.

우리가 가져야 할 자세는 ‘아멘!’이라는 순종의 자세입니다.

그럴 때, 기적이 일어나는 현장에 함께 참여할 수 있는 영광과 기쁨을 누리게 됩니다.

그리고 한가지 잊지 마실 것은… 하나님께는 기적이 ‘일상’임도 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.

Do You Believe in Miracles?

"Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, 'Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?'" (Genesis 17:17)

For Abraham, who was a hundred years old, and for Sarah, who was ninety, the prospect of having a child was undoubtedly a miracle. Therefore, when he heard God's word that his wife would bear a child, he 'laughed.' This laughter could have been a hollow laugh directed at himself or a scoffing laugh towards God. It was likely a silent chuckle of complaint, not loudly expressed.

Why was Abraham unable to accept this miracle?

It was because he listened to the word of God from a creature-centered point of view, limiting God's power based on his own experiences. He was caught in a logic-centered way of thinking, namely logical positivism, where logic denies anything beyond itself.

However, God is the Creator who exists above the created world. He existed before humans ever did. He is the one who created something out of nothing. Human scientific logic is important, but God also governs the realm of the superlogical that science has yet to explain.

Abraham viewed God at his own level, that of a created human. That's why he laughed (or scoffed) when he heard about things God could do at the level of the superlogical, the level of creation, the level of miracles, the level of an Almighty God.

Similarly, we can treat God like Abraham did. We make the mistake of trying to pull God down to a human level. However, the issues of creation, the solution to sin, and leading humans, who are confined by time and space, to eternal life are not within the realm of what created beings can do.

Yet, God has made a promise. The God who created something out of nothing has promised to solve the problem of sin and lead us to eternal life, and He has indeed acted on this promise by coming to earth as a human.

Abraham was used as a tool in this process, a patriarch of faith. The attitude that this tool should have is faith. When we believe in God, God's workings incorporate order, use logic and common sense, and also employ the superlogical and miracles for building ‘Kingdom of God.’

Therefore, we should not laugh when God speaks.

The attitude we should have is one of obedience, saying 'Amen!'

When we do, we have the honor and joy of participating in the scene where miracles happen.

And one thing to remember... please do not forget that miracles are ‘everyday occurrences’ to God.
