올바른 찬양을 드리고 계십니까?

“앞에서 가고 뒤에서 따르는 무리가 소리 높여 이르되 호산나 다윗의 자손이여 찬송 하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이여 가장 높은 곳에서 호산나 하더라”(마태복음 21:9)

내일은 종려 주일입니다.  예루살렘으로 입성하시는 예수님을 향하여 사람들은 ‘호산나’ 부르며 찬양하였습니다.  ‘호산나’는 ‘구원해 주시기를 간청합니다’라는 간구의 표현입니다.

그러나 나귀 새끼 타고 입성하시는 예수님을 향하여 승리의 입성, 왕의 입성으로 생각하며 외친 ‘간구의 표현’은 실은 그들이 생각한 메시야에 대한 칭송의 표현, 경배의 표현이었던 것입니다.

그러나 그들은 예수님께서 로마 압제로부터 자신을 해방시켜 주시고, 정치적, 경제적, 종교적 자유와 풍성함을 주실 것으로 기대한… 자기 중심의 ‘칭송의 표현’이었던 것입니다.

그래서… 결국… 이렇게 옹호적이었고, 우호적이었고, 강력한 경배를 표시했던 그들이 예수님을 배신하고 팔아 넘깁니다.  그들의 ‘호산나’ 대상이 되시는 예수님께서 자신들의 기대와는 달리 전혀 다른 모습, 즉 십자가의 예수님이 되셨기 때문입니다.

결국 그들이 외쳤던 ‘호산나’는 자기 자신을 위한 경배, 자기 중심적인 극도의 이기적 찬양, 찬양을 빙자한 자기 선전의 표현이었던 것입니다.

내일은 종려 주일입니다.  우리에게, 나에게 예수는 어떤 분이십니까?  나는 예수님을 어떤 분으로 생각하고 있습니까?  내일 예배 때 드려지는 우리의 찬양이 2천년 전의 ‘호산나’와 같은 위선적 고백과 같지 않기를… 오늘 한번 우리(나) 자신을 돌아 보는 시간을 가져 보시기를 원합니다.

나의 믿음의 연약함은 주님께 문제가 되지 않습니다.  그 약한 부분까지도 그대로 주님께 의지하실때 외면하지 않으시는 주님이십니다(막 9:24).  그리고 주님만이 ‘나의 주(Lord)되심’을 우리가 진심으로 고백할 때, 내일 우리가 올려 드리는 ‘호산나’ 고백은 진정 주님이 기뻐하시는 고백, 그래서 하나님의 임재가 가득한 종려주일 예배가 될 줄 믿습니다.

내일 귀한 종려주일 예배가 드려지기를 간절히 소망합니다.

Are You Offering the Right Praise?

"The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David!' 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!' 'Hosanna in the highest heaven!'" (Matthew 21:9)

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday. As Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people praised Him, shouting 'Hosanna.' 'Hosanna' is an expression of supplication, meaning 'save, please.'

However, the expression of supplication shouted towards Jesus, riding on a donkey, thinking of it as a victorious entry, as the entry of a king, was in fact an expression of praise and worship for the Messiah they envisioned.

Yet, their expression of praise was self-centered, expecting Jesus to liberate them from Roman oppression and to bring political, economic, and religious freedom and prosperity.

Therefore... in the end... those who were so supportive, friendly, and displayed strong worship betrayed and sold Jesus. This is because Jesus, the object of their 'Hosanna,' became something entirely different from their expectations, namely, Jesus of the cross.

Ultimately, the 'Hosanna' they cried out was an expression of worship for themselves, an extremely selfish praise centered on themselves, a self-promotion disguised as praise.

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday. Who is Jesus to us, to me? How do I perceive Jesus? I hope that our praise during tomorrow's worship will not be like the hypocritical confession of 'Hosanna' from 2,000 years ago... Today, I want us (me) to take some time to reflect on ourselves.

Our weakness in faith does not trouble the Lord. He does not turn away when we rely on Him, even in our weakest parts (Mark 9:24). And when we sincerely confess that only the Lord is 'my Lord,' I believe that the 'Hosanna' confession we offer tomorrow will be a confession that truly delights the Lord, thus making Palm Sunday worship filled with the presence of God.

I earnestly hope that a precious Palm Sunday worship will be offered tomorrow.
