Today’s Passage: John 16:31-33

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 

32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Title: Take Heart 담대하라!

The gospel of John has the longest account of the teachings and time that Jesus has with the disciples over the last supper. 

요한복음에는 예수님이 최후의 만찬을 통해 제자들과 나눈 가르침과 시간에 대한 가장 긴 기록이 있습니다. 

During the Last Supper, he tells the disciples extensively and directly of what will happen to him, them, and that he will return to the father.

최후의 만찬에서 예수님은 제자들에게 자신과 제자들에게 일어날 일과 아버지께로 돌아갈 일에 대해 광범위하고 직접적으로 말씀하십니다.

And in today’s passage, Jesus both challenges and reassures the disciples. 

그리고 오늘 본문에서 예수님은 제자들에게 도전과 안심을 동시에 주십니다.

The challenge comes when he asks “Do you now believe?” Because you’re all going to scatter and leave me alone which will be true at the cross apart from the disciple John.

도전은 "너희가 이제 믿느냐?"라고 물으실 때옵니다. 십자가에서 제자 요한을 제외하고는 모두 흩어져서 나를 내버려둘 것이기 때문입니다.

But Jesus doesn’t say this to test them, but to give peace and assurance that despite all that the disciples will face, they can take heart in knowing that Jesus has overcome!

그러나 예수님은 제자들을 시험하기 위해 이 말씀을 하신 것이 아니라 제자들이 직면하게 될 모든 일에도 불구하고 예수님이 이겼다는 것을 알고 마음을 가질 수 있도록 평안과 확신을 주시기 위해 이 말씀을 하신 것입니다!

There is so much suffering and pain that is yet to come for Jesus, and yet, he knows the Father will be with him. 

예수님에게는 아직 많은 고난과 고통이 기다리고 있지만, 아버지께서 함께하실 것을 알고 계십니다. 

Can we say the same? 

우리도 똑같이 말할 수 있을까요?

We can profess all we want about how we believe in God and the scriptures, but when there are times of suffering, how do we respond? 

우리는 하나님과 성경을 믿는다고 얼마든지 고백할 수 있지만, 고통의 시간이 오면 어떻게 반응할까요?

We might not be able to say wholeheartedly now that we have all faith in God, and there might be times where we want to just run in fear of the problems ahead of us. 

하나님을 온전히 믿는다 해도 전심으로 말하지 못할 수도 있고, 눈앞에 닥친 문제가 두려워 도망치고 싶을 때가 있을 수도 있습니다. 

But here is some good news. 

하지만 여기 좋은 소식이 있습니다. 

Even the disciples would run in fear of being caught or associated with Jesus when he was taken. These were people who spent actual, real close time with Jesus!

제자들조차도 예수님이 잡히거나 예수님과 연관될까봐 두려워 도망쳤을 것입니다. 이들은 예수님과 실제로 정말 가까운 시간을 보냈던 사람들이었습니다!

You would think that they, at least, could’ve had faith in the end. That there would be more than just John at the cross alongside many women in Jesus’ life. 

적어도 그들도 결국에는 믿음을 가질 수 있었을 것이라고 생각할 수 있습니다. 예수님의 생애에는 요한뿐만 아니라 많은 여인들이 함께 십자가에 못 박혔을 것입니다.

And yet, they would also be the disciples that end up being killed and martyred for their belief in Jesus as they eventually learn to have such faith that Christ has overcome the world and that the Father is always with them. 

하지만 그들도 결국 예수님을 믿는 믿음 때문에 죽임을 당하고 순교하는 제자들이었고, 그리스도가 세상을 이기셨고 아버지께서 항상 함께하신다는 믿음을 배웠을 것입니다.

It may take us many experiences of failure, trial, and suffering before we can entrust all things to Jesus and have hope that he has overcome the world. 

예수님께 모든 것을 맡기고 세상을 이기셨다는 희망을 갖기까지 많은 실패와 시련, 고통의 경험이 필요할 수 있습니다.

But take heart in this good news that Jesus has overcome the world and that the Father is with you!

하지만 예수님께서 세상을 이기셨고 아버지께서 여러분과 함께하신다는 이 기쁜 소식을 마음에 새겨보세요!

Even if it takes a lifetime of Easters and many more days all throughout our lives, let us be reminded of this good news that Christ has overcome sin and death.

일생 동안 부활절을 보내고 평생을 더 많은 날을 보내더라도 그리스도께서 죄와 죽음을 이기셨다는 이 기쁜 소식을 기억합시다. 

Brothers and Sisters, we can put all of our faith in this. And even if it seems hard to believe it now, do not be discouraged, for the Lord will still be gracious to you and show you his love when we struggle to believe. 

형제자매 여러분, 우리는 이 사실을 믿으면 됩니다. 지금은 믿기 어려워 보여도 낙심하지 마세요. 우리가 믿지 못할 때 주님은 여전히 우리에게 은혜를 베푸시고 그분의 사랑을 보여 주실 것이기 때문입니다. 

And may there be many days after trial and suffering that when we are asked “Do you now believe?” or “do you still believe?” that we can wholeheartedly say, “Yes. I believe that Christ has overcome.” 

그리고 시련과 고통을 겪은 후에 "이제 믿습니까?" 또는 "아직도 믿습니까?"라는 질문을 받을 때 "예. 그리스도께서 이기셨음을 믿습니다"라고 전심으로 말할 수 있는 날이 많이 있기를 바랍니다.

As we close with a song of praise, let’s sing with assurance that Christ has overcome. 

찬양의 노래로 마무리하면서 그리스도께서 이기셨다는 확신을 가지고 노래합시다.

Dear God, we thank you for this day.

하나님, 오늘을 주셔서 감사합니다.

Though there may be many trials and suffering in this life, 

이 세상에는 많은 시련과 고통이 있을 수 있습니다, 

May we have full assurance and faith that you have overcome all things!

주님께서 모든 것을 이기셨다는 확신과 믿음을 갖게 하소서!

That we would have faith that you will lead us through the suffering

주님께서 우리를 고통 가운데서 인도하실 것이라는 믿음을 갖게 하소서.

Through all the tears, anger, and hopelessness

모든 눈물과 분노와 절망 속에서도

As King David did when he proclaimed that he could walk through the valley of shadow and death 

다윗 왕이 사망의 음침한 골짜기를 다닐 수 있다고 선포했을 때처럼 

And fear no evil for you were with him. 

주께서 함께 하시니 악을 두려워하지 말게 하소서.

We thank you for all things, and in your Son’s name we pray. 

모든 것에 감사드리며 하나님의 아들, 예수님의 이름으로 기도드립니다.
