[말씀묵상 366 / 사도행전 51] 행 22:30-23:11 (062024) "그 누구 앞에서도 주눅 들지 않고, 담대하게 사역하기!"

사도행전 22장 마지막 절인 30절에서부터 4차 사도바울의 선교여행, 즉 로마로 가는 선교 여행이 시작됨을 보게 됩니다.  실은 본문의 상황은 아직도 예루살렘입니다.  그러나 사도바울은 로마사람인 천부장 앞에서 복음을 전하는 자세를 갖습니다.  이 말은 이미 사도 바울은 로마사람들을 향하여 복음을 전하고 있다는 뜻입니다.  

그렇습니다.  복음은 지역, 장소 등의 제약을 뛰어 넘습니다.  듣는 사람이 어디 출신이냐에 따라서 이미 그 지역까지 복음은 증거의 영향권 아래 놓이게 되는 것입니다. 오늘날처럼 글로벌 시대이고, 모든 통신과 나눔의 소통이 전 세계적이며, 빨리 나눌 수 있는 시대에 복음 증거는 전 세계가 하나의 선교 현장임을 기억할 수 있어야 합니다.

이렇게 역동적 선교 상황하에서 사도 바울이 보여주는 자세를 보면서 선교적 삶을 살아가는 우리들이 배워야 할 중요한 자세를 보게 됩니다.

첫째, 사도바울은 진실한 자의식과 책임의식을 갖고 사역했습니다(1-5).  본문 1절에 '양심을 따라 하나님을 섬겼다'고 바울은 고백하고 있습니다.  영어 성경에는 'good concience'로 번역하고 있습니다.  

우리가 '양심'이라고 하면 죄성의 인간이 갖고 있는 양심의 한계 쪽으로 생각하기 쉽고, 그래서 그러한 양심은 신앙적 표현이 아닐 수 있다고 생각할 수 있습니다.  그러나 바울이 보여준 자세는 진실한, 책임있는 자의식을 갖고 살았다고 봄이 맞겠습니다.  인간의 죄성 앞에서 솔직하게 자신의 죄성을 인정하였고, 하나님의 은혜와 십자가 복음 앞에서 자신의 삶을 철저하게 의지하는 자세를 가졌습니다.  이러한 자세야 말로 진정한 진실한 책임 의식의 모습이라 할 수 있습니다.  이를 한글 번역에서는 '양심'으로 번역했던 것입니다.

아뭏든, 바울의 담대한 자세는 진리 앞에, 진실 앞에, 남들 보든 안 보든, 자기 자신에게도 진정성 있는 자세로 살았다는 말입니다.  그랬기에 그는 천부장 앞에서도, 유대 지도자들 앞에서도, 다수 앞에서도 거리낌 없이 늠름하게, 담대한 자세를 가질 수 있었던 것입니다.

자기 자신과 하나님 앞에 진정성 있게, 진실하게 생각하고, 말하고, 행동했기에 그는 그 누구 앞에서도 담대하게, 당당하게 설 수 있었던 것입니다.

둘째, 사도 바울은 진리대로 증언하였습니다(6-10).  유대인 지도자들 그룹에는 사두개인들과 바리새인들이 섞여 있었습니다.  사두개인들은 인본주의적 신앙을 가진 자들입니다.  부활도, 천사도, 기적도 믿지 않는 자들이고, 모세 오경만 하나님의 말씀으로 믿는 자들입니다.  그러다 보면 하나님의 초월적 능력을 인정하지 못하게 되고, 그 결과 하나님을 제약하게 되며, 그 결과 자기가 만든 하나님을 믿게 됩니다.

바리새인들은 근본주의자들, 율법주의자들 이라 할 수 있습니다.  이들은 인간의 의지와 행위에 더 무게 중심을 두기에 자신들의 관점만이 절대적이라고 하는 오만함, 교만함, 닫힌 자세를 갖게 됩니다.    

물론 타협하지 말아야 할 신앙의 본질이 있습니다.  십자가의 은혜를 통한 구원, 성경의 권위, 삼위일체 하나님관 등 등... 그러나 그러한 본질적인 영역 외에 하나님의 다양한 측면도 있습니다.  이단이 아닌 여러 교단들이 갖는 다양한 측면들이 있습니다.  그러한 부분까지 이단으로 단절해 버리는 잘 못을 범할 수 있는 것이 근본주의적 신앙이고, 그 깊은 근원에는 인간의 의지와 생각을 더 절대화시키는 율법주의적 관점이 기저에 시작점이 될 수 있습니다.

이러한 사두개인과 바리새인들은 교리적 차이와 한계를 갖고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 그 근본 속에는 자기 중심사상, 이기적 사상 등이 깔려 있기에 어떤 이슈가 생기게 되면 분열과 분쟁이 일어날 수 밖에 없습니다.  결국 진리를 전하는 사도 바울앞에서 이 두 그룹은 분쟁하고, 다투게 됩니다.  바울은 부활은 사실이고, 신앙인도 갖게 되는 능력이라고 진리를 말하였습니다.  그러나 그 진리관 앞에서 비진리관과 자세를 갖는 자들은 다툴 수 밖에 없습니다.

이렇게 사도 바울은 진리 편에 서서, 진리 앞세우고 나아갔기에 어떤 변질, 왜곡된 관을 갖고 있는 그룹을 향해서도 담대하게, 당당하게 진리를 말할 수 있었던 것입니다.  그렇습니다  진리안에 자유가 있기에, 담대함, 당당함의 자유 또한 갖게 됩니다.

셋째, 사도바울은 하나님의 인도하심에 순종으로 따르는 담대한 자세를 갖습니다(11).  천부장을 통해 사도바울의 안전을 위해 예루살렘을 떠나 로마로 가게 됩니다.  하나님의 큰 그림, 하나님의 인도하심이 모든 상황 가운데 있었던 것입니다.

하나님은 살아계신 분이십니다. 인간 생명의 주인이십니다.  그리고 늘 큰 그림을 갖고 세심하게 인도하시는 분이십니다.  머리카락 하나라도 하나님의 뜻 없이는 함부로 떨어 뜨리지 않습니다.  그래서 하나님의 인도하심에 늘 안심하고, 평안하고, 기대해야 합니다.  사도바울은 비로 죄인의 상태로 로마로 호송(?)되는 상황이 되겠지만, 실은 하나님께서 허락하신 4차 선교여행의 시작을 하게 된 것입니다.

나는 담대합니까?  

누구 앞에서나... 언제나...?

하나님 앞에, 말씀 앞에 진실합시다.  

그러면...  누구 앞에서나, 언제나... 

담대할 수 있습니다.

Acts 22:30-23:11 (06/20/2024) "Serving Boldly Without Fear Before Anyone!"

From the last verse of Acts 22:30, we see the beginning of Apostle Paul’s fourth missionary journey, his journey to Rome. The actual setting of this passage is still in Jerusalem. However, Apostle Paul adopts the posture of preaching the gospel before the Roman commander. This means that Paul is already starting to preach the gospel to the Romans.

Indeed, the gospel transcends regions and places. Regardless of where the listener is from, the gospel’s influence extends to that region. In today’s global era, where communication and sharing happen worldwide and quickly, we must remember that the whole world is a mission field for spreading the gospel.

In observing the dynamic missionary situation and the posture Apostle Paul exhibits, we can learn important attitudes necessary for living a missionary life.

First, Apostle Paul served with a sincere self-awareness and sense of responsibility (Acts 22:1-5). In verse 1, Paul confesses, "I have lived my life with a good conscience before God." The English Bible translates this as "good conscience."

When we think of 'conscience,' it’s easy to think of the limitations of human conscience tainted by sin, and thus, such a conscience may not seem like a spiritual expression. However, the attitude Paul showed was one of sincere, responsible self-awareness. He was honest about his sinfulness before God and depended thoroughly on God’s grace and the gospel of the cross. Such an attitude can be seen as true, genuine responsibility. This is what was translated as 'conscience' in Korean.

In any case, Paul’s bold stance was such that he lived authentically before truth and honesty, whether others were watching or not, even before himself. This is why he could stand confidently and boldly before the commander, Jewish leaders, and many others.

He could stand boldly and confidently before anyone because he thought, spoke, and acted with authenticity and honesty before God and himself.

Second, Apostle Paul testified according to the truth (Acts 22:6-10). Among the Jewish leaders, there were Sadducees and Pharisees. The Sadducees held a humanistic faith, denying the resurrection, angels, and miracles, and only believing in the Pentateuch as God’s word. This leads to not recognizing God’s transcendent power, thereby limiting God and ending up believing in a god of their own making.

The Pharisees were fundamentalists and legalists. They emphasized human will and actions, leading to an arrogant, prideful, and closed attitude, believing only their perspective to be absolute.

Of course, there are core aspects of faith that must not be compromised, such as salvation through the grace of the cross, the authority of the Bible, and the belief in the Triune God. However, outside these essential areas, there are various aspects of God that can be diverse without being heretical. Different denominations have their unique perspectives, and it is a mistake to dismiss them as heresy. Fundamentalist faith often starts from legalistic viewpoints that absolutize human will and thought.

Such Sadducees and Pharisees not only have doctrinal differences but also underlying self-centered and selfish ideologies, leading to inevitable division and conflict over issues. Ultimately, in the presence of Apostle Paul who testified the truth, these two groups disputed and fought. Paul stated that resurrection is a reality and a power that believers possess. However, those with a distorted view of truth inevitably clashed with this proclamation.

Thus, Apostle Paul, standing on the side of truth, boldly and confidently declared the truth to groups holding corrupted or distorted views. Indeed, freedom in the truth brings the freedom to be bold and confident.

Third, Apostle Paul had the bold attitude of following God’s guidance obediently (Acts 22:11). Through the commander, Paul’s safety was ensured, and he was taken from Jerusalem to Rome. This was part of God’s grand plan and guidance in all circumstances.

God is alive and the Lord of life. He always has a grand plan and guides us meticulously. Not a single hair falls without God’s will. Therefore, we should always feel at peace and hopeful in God’s guidance. Though Paul was in the position of a prisoner being escorted to Rome, it was, in fact, the beginning of his fourth missionary journey permitted by God.
