한국교회는 '정교분리의 원칙(원리)'를 많이 말해 왔습니다.  이는 '교회가 정치에 관여 해서는 안된다는 자세'로 오해 되어 왔습니다.  교회는 교회이고, 세상은 세속에 속한 것이기에, 복음증거와 순수 전도에(만) 열정을 두면 된다는 자세를 가져 왔습니다.  복음 전파와 순수 영혼 구원의 열정은 신앙 생활에서 매우 중요한 자세를 말하지만, 자칫 교회가 세상과 분리 되고, 교회는 세상 일에는 관여하지 않아도 된다는(혹은 관여 하지 말아야 한다는) 오해를 낳는 표현이기도 합니다.

복음은 개인 구원을 위해서 반드시 필요합니다.  그리고 그 개인적으로, 은혜로 구원 받은 자는 이 땅에 '계속해서' 살아가야 하고, 하나님 나라 건설의 자세를 가져야 하기에 복음은 개인적인 면 뿐만 아니라, 공동체적이고, 사회적인 것입니다.

하나님은 세상의 모든 영역을 다스리시는 분이시기에, 사회, 문화, 정치, 경제 등 모든 영역도 하나님의 주권아래 있음을 알아야 합니다.  그리고 그 하나님 나라 건설의 도구가 되어야 할 성도와 교회는 이 땅의 모든 삶의 영역(정치도 포함)에 대해서 무관심 해서는 안되며, 하나님의 공의와 정의, 그리고 십자가 인자와 은혜가 충실하게 적용되어야 함을 믿어야 하고, 순종으로 실천해야 합니다(이사야 16:5, 호세아 3:19-20).

기독교인은 정치 정당에 관점과 무게를 두어서는 안됩니다.  정당은 정당의 목표와 이기적, 이권적 자세를 갖고 있기 때문입니다.  물론 기독교인 개인으로서 정당에 참여할 수 있습니다.  그러나 하나님 나라 건설과 관련해서는 한계가 있음을 알고, 개인이 말씀과 진리에 입각해서 판단해야 할 것입니다.  성경을 볼 때 일반적으로 우리가 말하는 보수적인 측면도 있고, 진보적인 측면도 있기 때문입니다.  그래서 일반적인 기독교인으로서는 '정치 정당' 보다는 '정책'에 관심을 두어야 합니다.

이 땅의 어떤 정치 지도자들도 정당에 속해 있는 한 완벽한 하나님 나라 원리와 동일 할 수 없기에 기독교인들은 어느 정당에 대해서든지 정책에 대한 분석과 평가, 비판과 판단을 내려야 합니다.  이렇게 정치는 하나님의 정의와 공의를 실현할 수 있는 통로가 될 수 있습니다.

그러나 이 땅의 정치와 정책으로는 온전히 하나님 나라 구원과 복음의 원리를 적용할 수 없음 또한 알아야 합니다.  오직 공의와 정의, 그리고 인자와 긍휼, 이 두가지 영역을 충실하게 감당하신 분은 오직 십자가의 예수 그리스도 뿐이십니다.  십자가의 참된 신적, 전인적, 균형적 구원의 길이 아니고서는 이 땅에 참된 구원의 길, 하나님 나라 건설의 길이 없음을 우리는 너무나 잘 알고 있습니다.

그러나 기독교인들은 참된 공의와 정의(기본 정의 & 분배적 정의)가 이 땅에 이루어 지는지를 늘 면밀하게 살펴 보고, 그러한 영역이 어느 정당에서든지 잘 실현 되는지를 꼼꼼히 깨어 살펴 보고, 비판과 격려의 자세를 함께 균형있게 가져야 할 것입니다.

뿐만 아니라, 비평이 비판을 넘어 비난이 되고, 흑색 선전, 인격 모독, 가짜 뉴스, 편파적 나눔, 확증 편향적 호도, 부분을 놓고 일반화 하는 오류 등 등의 죄인된 인간의 죄성에 기인한 온갖 혼돈과 무질서의 과정/나눔 등에 대해서 기독교인들은 정당한 나눔과 과정이 되도록 깨어 있는 시민의 역할 등도 해야 할 것입니다.

그러한 가운데 늘 십자가의 복음에 의지하는 참된 사랑의 자세와 기도와 분별 속에서 이 땅에 하나님 나라가 이루어 지기를 소망하는 자세와 화목의 자세를 가져야 할 것입니다(롬 12:18).  만약 미움만 가지고, 만약 서투른 이기적 자세만 가지고, 만약 나만이 옳다라는 닫혀진 자세만 가지고 이 사회속에 있다면, 늘 나 자신을 돌아보고, 함께 서로 기득권에 얽매이지 않도록, 늘 깨어 있도록, 서로 격려하며, 깨어 있기를 기도해야 할 것입니다.

중요한 것은 이런 열린 자세로 '함께 나누는 것'입니다.  그러나 준비되지 않은 자세로 나누게 되면 쉽게 비난 하거나, 파당을 이루기가 쉽습니다.  서로 기도하고, 나눔의 올바른 자세와 과정에 대해서 서로 동의하는 가이드 라인을 만들면서, 함께 신앙과 성경의 토대 위에서 나누는 훈련을 조금씩 행할 때, 기독교인들은 이 땅에서 올바른 자세와 방향을 제시할 수있을 것입니다.

지금 현재, 하나님의 나라는 불가능하기에 주님 빨리 오셔야 한다는 미래 중심적인 그런 현세 부정적 자세도 성경적이지 않습니다. 

물론 하나님의 나라는 주님 다시 오실 때까지 완전해 지지 않습니다.  그러나 이미 주님께서 십자가 길을 가셨고, 부활하셨기에 그 하나님의 나라는 가능해 졌고, 지금 진행되고 있습니다(already not yet).

그래서 우리는 매일 매일 삶의 모든 영역에서(즉 개인, 내면, 관계, 교회 안, 교회 밖, 가정, 직장, 학교, 사회, 문화, 정치, 경제 등 모든 영역, 그리고 가까운 내가 사는 동네, 미국, 한국, 이 땅의 모든 나라... 열방 등) 하나님의 나라를 건설하며, 복음적 삶, 그리고 복음을 삶으로, 말로, 마음으로, 행동으로 전파하는 삶을 살아야 합니다.  이것을 미션얼/미셔널 삶이라 말합니다.

현재 미국은 새로 선출된 대통령으로 인해 여러 상황을 맞이하고 있습니다.  그가 실행하고 있는 정책에는 기독교 보수적인 관점에서 지지할 내용들도 있고, 또 난민들에 대한 편향적인 정책 등은 결코 성경적이라 할 수 없는 내용도 있습니다.  우리는 그의 정책 개별 적인 것에 대해서 지지와 반대를 구체적으로 해야 하고, 가장 중요한 하나님 나라의 기본 원리와 인권이 함부로 훼손 되지 않도록 입장을 표명하고, 또 이를 위해서 기도해야 할 것입니다.

그리고 무관심 대신 정의와 공의, 그리고 인자와 긍휼의 온전한 십자가 관점에서 꼼꼼히 따져 보고, 선거 막바지로 갈 수록 치열해 지는 흑색 선전, 가짜 뉴스, 선동 등에 피곤해 하거나 현혹되기 보다는 더 깨어 기도하며, 하나님의 뜻대로 나라가 인도함 받도록 깨어 지켜 보는 자세, 그리고 깨어 기도하는 자세를 꼭 가져야 할 것입니다.

Still, Christians must carefully examine whether true justice—both basic and distributive—is being established in our society, and they must be discerning and attentive to how well such justice is being carried out by any political group. Christians should hold a balanced attitude of both criticism and encouragement.

Moreover, we must not allow critique to devolve into slander. We must be vigilant against character attacks, black propaganda, fake news, biased discourse, confirmation bias, overgeneralization, and all other forms of confusion and disorder that arise from human sin. Christians must take on the role of awake, discerning citizens who help ensure that the processes of discourse remain fair and just.

Above all, we must cultivate a posture of true love, rooted in the gospel of the cross, and maintain a spirit of prayer and discernment. We should long for God’s Kingdom to come on this earth and seek peace (Romans 12:18). If we engage in society with only hatred, selfish ambition, or the attitude that “only I am right,” we must examine ourselves, strive not to be entangled in privilege, stay spiritually awake, and encourage each other to remain watchful.

What matters is sharing with an open attitude. But if we engage in sharing without the right preparation, we may quickly fall into accusation or division. Through prayer, and by agreeing on healthy guidelines for discussion, we can practice how to engage in faith-based, biblically grounded conversations. Over time, Christians will be better equipped to model proper attitudes and direction in this world.

It is also not biblical to hold a negative, defeatist view of the world and say, “Since God's Kingdom is impossible here, the Lord must return quickly.” While it is true that God’s Kingdom will not be made perfect until Christ returns, the Kingdom has already been made possible and is now advancing, because Christ has walked the way of the cross and risen again. This is the "already but not yet" nature of the Kingdom.

Therefore, we must seek to build God’s Kingdom in all areas of our lives—personal, inner life, relationships, inside and outside the church, in the family, workplace, school, society, culture, politics, economy, our neighborhoods, the United States, Korea, and to the ends of the earth. We must live a gospel-centered life, proclaiming the gospel in words, actions, thoughts, and lifestyle.

In the U.S., with a newly elected president, various political changes are unfolding. Some policies align with a Christian conservative perspective, while others—such as biased refugee policies—clearly conflict with biblical values. We must express support or opposition to specific policies, ensure the principles of God’s Kingdom and human rights are not violated, and pray accordingly.

In Korea, with less than 30 days left before the presidential election, we cannot ignore the situation just because we live in the U.S. Indifference is the worst stance to take. As the people choose their president, those with voting rights must exercise them prayerfully, attentively, and from a biblical perspective. Even if we do not have voting rights, we must earnestly pray for our homeland during this critical month.

Instead of remaining indifferent, we must carefully evaluate everything from the perspective of the cross—justice, mercy, and truth. As the election intensifies and more black propaganda, fake news, and manipulation appear, we should not be overwhelmed or misled, but stay alert in prayer and seek God's guidance for the nation.

In the Old Testament, prophets boldly proclaimed God’s will before kings. Some were persecuted, while others effectively influenced rulers. Today, the roles of kings and priests belong to believers and the church—but we must also faithfully fulfill the prophetic role with balance. This, too, is the posture we are called to have.
