국민 성숙도의 중요성

민주주의는 다수의 결정을 가장 존중하는 제도입니다.  그래서 국가나 공동체의 최종 결정기준을 다수의 결정에 둡니다.  그리고 그 다수의 결정을 자신들 원하는 쪽으로 이끌기 위해서 정치가들은 많은 노력을 합니다.

방송을 이용하기도 하고, 글이나 신문 매체 등을 이용하기도 합니다.  이럴 때 모두가 객관적인 사실을 꼼꼼히 살펴 보고, 입장이나 주장을 호소력있게 하기 위해서 논리적 전개를 무리하게 하지 않는지, 치우친 관점만을 강조하지는 않는지 등 등을 늘 냉철하게 살펴 보아야 합니다.

그렇지 않으면 ‘대중은 우중이다’라는 표현을 통해서도 알 수 있듯이 쉽게 ‘다수가 지지하는 쪽이 승자’가 되는 단순한 민주주의 논리 때문에 한 국가가, 한 공동체가 큰 어려움을 겪게 될 수도 있습니다.

결국은 국민 성숙도가 민주주의라는 제도하에서는 가장 중요하다고 할 수 있습니다.  그래서 한국의 대통령 선거가 끝난 지금도 계속 국민의 성숙도가 중요하고, 미국의 대통령의 행정시행에 대해서도 국민의 성숙도를 통해 바른 입장을 내는 것이 필요하기에 이 땅 어디에 살든지 그 지역의 국민으로서, 주민으로서 깨어 있는 자세를 가져야 할 것입니다.

그래서 내가 지금 보고, 듣고 있는 뉴스 혹은 시사관점 보도 등에 대해서 늘 객관성이 있는가, 사실을 위주로 보도하고 있는가, 진실 대신 주장만 강조하고 있지 않는가 등 등을 늘 깨어 보며 나름대로 정리하는 자세를 가져야 합니다. 

이는 자신이 선호하는 정당이라고 해서 무조건 ‘다 옳고 맞다’라고만 해서는 안된다는 것입니다.  이 세상의 그 어떤 인간도, 그 어떤 정당도 완벽한 인간/정당은 없습니다.  어느 정도 부족함도 있게 마련입니다.  그렇게 건강한 비판적 자세를 가져야 더 건강한 사회가 됩니다.

둘째, 혼자 이런 분석과 분별을 하게 되면 한계가 있습니다.  그래서 건강한 나눔, 토론 공동체를 만들고, 그 안에서 ‘함께’ 나누는 토대를 마련하면 좋습니다.  혼자 보다는 같이 할 때, 아무래도 좀 더 객관적이 될 수 있습니다. 

소수라도 함께 이런 사회적인 영역에 대해서 함께 나눌 때 서로 의견을 교환하고, 더 객관적 관점을 가질 수 있습니다.  이때 나의 주장만 하기 보다는 서로 열린 마음으로 말하고, 듣는 자세가 필요합니다.  토론이 아니라 일방적 주장만 한다거나, 감정적 자세만 갖게 되면 그 모임은 금방 객관성을 잃게 됩니다. 

토론 혹은 대화를 시작할 때, 서로 객관적 자세와 진리에 함께 도달하겠다는 그런 동기에 대한 점검, 그리고 감정이 고조 되지 않도록 하고, 주장만 하지 않겠다고 하고, 의견이 달라도 과정에 충실 할 때 서로 인정하겠다고 하는 등 등 서로 동의할 수 있는 그런 기본 대화 가이드 라인을 서로 만들면 좋을 것 같습니다.

공의 없는 헌신은 값싼 희생이며, 인자 없는 공의는 무자비한 끝없는 정쟁일 따름입니다.  그러나 십자가는 이 둘을 동시에 행하신 것입니다(이사야 16:5).  그래서 인류를 향한 참된 해결책입니다.

그래야 매일 우리가 ‘하나님의 나라가 하늘에서 이루어 진 것 처럼, 땅에서도 이루어 지기를 원합니다’라는 주기도문의 기도가 진실한 기도, 살아있는 기도, 응답받는 기도가 될 것입니다.

We must pray for our nation and its leaders and live in a way that bears witness to the gospel—not just in words but through actions and societal engagement. Christians must live as such not only within the church but also in the world.

Living as a Christian in a secular society is extremely difficult. Since the core values and aims of society differ, Christians will inevitably encounter situations where they must not compromise. Up to that point, however, we must do our best to stand for justice and righteousness, and when we face the limits of worldly values, we must move forward—like Jesus—with compassion, service, and sacrifice.
