(데살로니가전서 1:1-10)

“이는 우리 복음이 너희에게 말로만 이른 것이 아니라 또한 능력과 성령과 큰 확신으로 된 것임이라”(5)

신약 성경에서 가장 먼저 쓰여진 책이 데살로니가서로 알려 지고 있습니다.  이는 복음서보다 더 먼저 쓰여진 책입니다.  

대략 주후 50년 경으로 추정되며, 바울이  2차 전도 여행 때 개척하였다가 유대인들의 고발 때문에 급히 데살로니가를 떠나 고린도에 머물면서 데살로니가 성도님들을 위해서 쓴 책입니다.  급히 떠나야 했기에 ‘글’로 계속 양육함이 필요했을 수도 있었습니다.

바울의 편지 서두는 ‘감사’로 시작합니다.  자신이 급하게 떠났음에도 불구하고 데살로니가 성도님들이 믿음으로 잘 성장하고 있다는 소식을 들으며 바울은 길게 감사의 글을 남깁니다(2-10).

믿음과 사랑과 소망의 삶을 살고 있었고(3), 하나님의 택하심의 확실성(4), 복음의 실제적 능력(5), 많은 환난가운데에서도 계속 제자의 길을 걸어가며(6), 인근 지역에도 믿음의 본이 됨(7-9), 그리고 다시 오실 주님에 대한 확고한 믿음의 자세(10) 등이 데살로니가 교인들이 갖고 있었던 귀한 신앙의 모습이었습니다.

이런 모습을 보며 바울이 어찌 감사가 나오지 않을 수 있겠습니까?  그런데 이런 감사의 근원은 바로 데살로니가 성도들로부터 나온 것이 아니었습니다.  바울은 ‘하나님께 감사’(2)한다고 했고, 하나님의 택하심의 강력함을 기억했으며(4), 초림 이후 재림까지 역사하시는 예수가 감사의 본질적 이유라고 설명합니다(10).  

그렇습니다.  감사의 본질 되시는 하나님을 기억함이 참된 감사입니다.  그 하나님께 감사 드릴 때, 그 하나님으로 인해 더 풍성한 감사가 계속, 넘치게 될 줄 믿습니다.  하나님의 능력과 사랑은 무한하기 때문입니다.

상황이나 사람을 향하는 것이 아니라, 상황과 사람 위에 계시고, 이끌어 주시는 삼위일체 하나님과 그 하나님의 말씀을 의지할 때(5), 진정한, 참된, 풍성한  감사가 넘치게 될 줄 믿습니다.

9월, 감사가 넘치시는 한 달 되시기를 기원합니다.

(1 Thessalonians 1:1–10)

“For our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction.” (v. 5)

It is known that 1 Thessalonians is the very first book written in the New Testament—even earlier than the Gospels.

It is estimated to have been written around A.D. 50, when Paul, after planting the church during his second missionary journey, had to leave Thessalonica in haste because of accusations from the Jews. While staying in Corinth, he wrote this letter for the believers in Thessalonica. Because he had to leave so quickly, there may have been a need for him to continue nurturing them through “letters.”

The beginning of Paul’s letter starts with thanksgiving. Though he had to leave in haste, Paul had heard the news that the Thessalonian believers were growing well in faith, and so he wrote a lengthy expression of gratitude (vv. 2–10).

They were living lives of faith, love, and hope (v. 3); they held firm to the certainty of God’s choosing (v. 4); they experienced the real power of the gospel (v. 5); they continued walking the path of discipleship even amidst much affliction (v. 6); they became examples of faith to the surrounding regions (vv. 7–9); and they had a firm hope in the Lord who will come again (v. 10). These were the precious qualities of faith that the believers in Thessalonica displayed.

How could Paul not be thankful when seeing such faith? Yet the source of this thanksgiving did not come from the Thessalonian believers themselves. Paul said that he gave thanks to God (v. 2), remembered the strength of God’s choosing (v. 4), and explained that Jesus—who works from His first coming until His return—was the very essence of his thanksgiving (v. 10).

Indeed, true thanksgiving is remembering God Himself, the essence of all gratitude. When we give thanks to God, we believe that thanksgiving will continue to abound and overflow because of Him—for God’s power and love are limitless.

When our focus is not on circumstances or people, but on the Triune God who is above circumstances and people and who guides us—and when we rely on His Word (v. 5)—then genuine, true, and abundant thanksgiving will surely overflow.

I pray that this September will be a month overflowing with thanksgiving.
