“그 후에 요아스가 여호와의 전을 보수할 듯을 두고…”(24:4)

요아스 왕은 7살에 왕이 되었습니다.  제사장 여호야다의 후견으로 인해 나이가 어렸지만 신앙으로 잘 자랐습니다.  왕이 되고, 제사장의 신앙 양육의 덕분으로 요아스는 개혁과 영적 부흥에 초점을 두는 통치를 행합니다.

그래서 그는 예배의 회복, 하나님과의 관계 회복, 신앙의 회복의 가장 중요한 터전이 되는 성전을 보수하기로 마음 먹습니다(4).  여호람과 아달랴 등의 통치 기간 중 신앙의 영역이 많이 무너졌고, 그 증표로 성전은 많이 훼손된 상태였던 것입니다.

그러나 요아스의 성전 보수 계획은 쉽게 실행되지 못합니다.  그가 나이 어린 탓도 있었지만, 여러가지 면에서 준비가 안된, 그리고 장벽도 많이 있는 상황에서 그것을 이겨낼 능력도 없었기 때문입니다(5-7).

그 기간이 무려 23년간 계속 됩니다.  그러나 요아스 재임 23년째 될 때, 비로소 성전 보수가 온전히 이루어 집니다.  나의 삶에 이렇게 계획했지만, 작정했지만, 상황 등 여러가지 어려움으로 인해 중단된 영역은 있지 않습니까?

하나님 나라 건설을 위해서 분명히 계속 되어야 할 영역 중 나의 약함과 상황적 어려움 등으로 인해 포기하거나, 중단한 영역은 있지 않습니까?  2-3년 전에 있었던 판데믹 기간이 길어 지면서 예배가 서서히 삶에서 사라지거나, 기도 및 선교 등의 모습도 ‘안하게 되는데 익숙’해 지지는 않았습니까?

요아스는 포기하지 않았습니다.  끝까지 시도했습니다.  그 기간이 무려 23년이 걸려도 포기하지 않고 끝까지 헌신했습니다(10, 13).

요아스는 혼자 하지 않았습니다.  제사장 여호야다와 힘을 합하였고, 백성들과도 힘을 합하였습니다.  모든 은사를 가진 자들과 함께 이 사역을 행했습니다(5-8).

요아스는 자발적 헌신으로 나아갔습니다(10).  그 결과 풍성한 헌신이 되었습니다(11).  계획하고 결심한 사역이 끝까지 갈 수 있기 위해서는 기쁨과 자발적 헌신에서 시작할 때 가능합니다.

이렇게 행함으로 ‘세상에 사는 모든 날에 여호와의 전에 항상 번제를 드렸다’(14)고 합니다.  하나님 나라 건설에서 중단된 사역이 다시 재개 되면 그 증거가 바로 ‘예배의 회복’입니다.  내 삶에 참된 예배, 능력의 예배, 기쁨의 예배가 회복 될 때 바로 중단된 하나님 나라가 다시 재개, 회복, 완성 되었음을 의미합니다.

그런 의미로 중단된 하나님 나라 건설의 영역은 반드시 ‘다시’ ‘계속’ ‘끝까지’ 진행되어야 합니다.

나의 삶에 하나님과의 관계 영역에 중단된 영역은 없습니까?

(2 Chronicles 23:16–24:16)

“Afterward, Joash decided to restore the temple of the LORD.” (24:4)

King Joash became king at the age of seven. Under the guidance and mentorship of the priest Jehoiada, he grew up in faith even though he was young. When he became king, thanks to the priest’s spiritual nurture, Joash governed with a focus on reform and spiritual renewal.

He determined to repair the temple (v.4), which was the most important foundation for the restoration of worship, the restoration of the relationship with God, and the renewal of faith. During the reigns of Jehoram and Athaliah, the spiritual life of the nation had greatly collapsed, and the ruined condition of the temple was a visible sign of that decline.

However, Joash’s plan to restore the temple was not easily carried out. He was still young, and in many ways unprepared, lacking the strength to overcome the numerous obstacles before him (vv.5–7).

That period lasted twenty-three long years. Yet in the twenty-third year of Joash’s reign, the temple restoration was finally completed. Isn’t it true that there are areas in our lives where we had planned or resolved to do something, but have stopped due to difficulties or circumstances?

Among the areas that should certainly continue for the building of God’s kingdom, are there not some we have given up or suspended because of our weaknesses or external challenges? During the long pandemic a few years ago, did worship gradually disappear from our lives? Did we perhaps become “accustomed to not praying or serving in missions”?

But Joash did not give up. He persisted to the end. Even though it took twenty-three years, he remained devoted and faithful to complete the task (vv.10, 13).

Joash did not work alone. He joined forces with the priest Jehoiada and with the people. Together with all those who had various gifts and skills, they carried out this work (vv.5–8).

Joash’s restoration work was driven by voluntary and joyful giving (v.10), and as a result, there was abundant offering (v.11). A ministry or mission that begins with joyful, willing dedication is the one that can continue to the end.

Because of this, “as long as Jehoiada lived, burnt offerings were presented continually in the temple of the LORD” (v.14). Whenever a work of God’s kingdom that had been halted resumes, the evidence is the restoration of worship. When true worship—worship full of power and joy—is restored in our lives, it means that the halted work of God’s kingdom has been resumed, restored, and brought toward completion.

In this sense, every area of God’s kingdom work that has been stopped must surely begin again, continue, and be carried through to the end.
