(에스라 7:11-28)

“우리 조상들의 하나님 여호와를 송축할지로다 그가 왕의 마음에 예루살렘 여호와의 성전을 아름답게 할 뜻을 두시고…”(27)

이 땅의 모든 영역이 창조주 하나님의 주권아래 있음을 더 크게, 더 명확하게 깨닫게 되는 본문입니다.  이방왕인 바사(페르시아) 왕 아닥사스다를 통해 하나님께서 구체적으로 성전 재건을 행하십니다.

그는 왕으로서 공적 명령(조서)을 내립니다(11).  그는 에스라와 함께 예루살렘으로 돌아갈 자들은 원하는 대로 돌아가도록 하고(13), 율법에 의거한 과정을 밟게 하며(14), 자문관들도 함께 동행하게 하고(14), 탈취한 성전 기물도 돌려 주게 합니다(15-16).

제사로 드릴 짐승들도 공급받도록 돕고(17), 이런 모든 과정을 위해 드는 비용도 공급해 줍니다(18).  그 외 필요한 것을 공급하도록(19-20) 공적 명령을 내리되, 이러한 일이 지체됨이 없이 신속히 되도록 명령합니다(21).

그는 여호와 하나님 존재의 강력함에 대한 어느 정도의 지식이 있었고(23), 1500킬로미터나 되는 예루살렘까지의 여정에 편의와 안전도 보장해 주려고 합니다(24).  에스라에게 법적 시행 권한을 부여함으로서 예루살렘으로 돌아온 백성들의 안녕과 질서도 보장하도록 돕습니다(26).

이 모든 상황을 하나님께서는 이방 왕인 아닥사스다 왕을 통하여 구체적으로, 전인적으로 실행하십니다.  하나님은 온 열방의 하나님이십니다.  하나님은 온 역사의 하나님이십니다. 

어찌 이 하나님을 찬양하지 않을 수 있겠습니까?(26-28)

오늘 동일하신, 전능하신, 역사의 주관자 하나님께서 온 열방에서, 모든 사람을 통하여 ‘반드시’ 하나님 나라를 건설하실 것입니다.  성전 재건 상황 가운데 유혹도 있었고, 핍박도 있었고, 16년이라는 짧지 않은 기간 동안의 중단 등도 있었지만… 결국 하나님은 계획을 실행/성취하십니다.

그래서… 성도가 가져야 할 자세는 ‘소망의 인내’(endurance with hope)입니다.  하나님께서 반드시 약속하신 바를 성취하시기 때문입니다!

(Ezra 7:11–28)

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem…” (v.27)

This passage helps us to see more deeply and clearly that every sphere of this world is under the sovereign rule of the Creator God. Through a Gentile king—Artaxerxes of Persia—God concretely carries out the rebuilding of the temple.

As king, Artaxerxes issues an official decree (v.11). He allows those who wish to return with Ezra to go back to Jerusalem freely (v.13), ensures that the process follows the Law (v.14), sends advisors along with him (v.14), and orders that the temple articles, once plundered, be returned (vv.15–16).

He also provides animals for the sacrifices (v.17) and covers all expenses required for the entire process (v.18). Furthermore, he commands that whatever else may be needed should be supplied (vv.19–20), and that everything be done promptly without delay (v.21).

Artaxerxes had some understanding of the power and greatness of the Lord God (v.23). He even guarantees convenience and safety for the 1,500-kilometer journey to Jerusalem (v.24). By granting Ezra authority to enforce the law, he helps ensure the welfare and order of the returning people (v.26).

Through this Gentile king, Artaxerxes, God brings about His purposes in a concrete and comprehensive way. God is the Lord of all nations. God is the Lord of all history.

How can we not praise such a God? (vv.26–28)

This same Almighty God, the Sovereign Lord of history, will surely build His Kingdom through all people and among all nations. During the rebuilding of the temple, there were temptations, persecutions, and even a long 16-year interruption—but ultimately, God’s plan was carried out and fulfilled.

Therefore, the attitude that every believer must hold is “endurance with hope.”

For God will surely fulfill what He has promised!
