작게 보이더라도, 하나씩 실천하며 나아갑시다.

지난 8월 26일에 네팔에서 대규모 홍수가 발생했다는 소식을 들었습니다.  8월 27일 현재, 최소 사망자가362명, 실종자가 1400여명이 넘으며, 새로운 홍수가 일어날 가능성도 있다고 신문은 보도 하고 있습니다.

문제는 이 홍수가 비가 많이 와서 생긴 것이라기 보다는 빙하로 뒤덮인 히말라야 지역의 얼음들이 녹고, 그로 인해 빙하와 바위가 강을 막아 물이 불고, 그로 인해 둑이 터졌고, 범람한 강물이 하류의 주거지를 덮친 결과 일어났다는 것입니다.

결국 지구 온난화가 직접적인 원인이라고 할 수 있지는 않더라도, 간접적 영향으로 일어난 것 만큼은 사실인 것입니다.  앞으로 빙하가 녹게 되면 이런 류의 홍수가 더 많이 일어날 가능성이 크다는 사실입니다.

지구 온난화는 다른 나라 얘기이고, 먼 미래의 얘기라고 생각하는 것은 너무나 이기적인 자세이고, 창조의 회복 또한 구원의 영역임을 이해하는 개혁주의 관점을 가진 크리스천이라면 이런 삶의 영역에 대해서도 매우 진지하면서도, 최선을 다하는 자세를 가져야 할 것입니다.

전 지구는 하나의 가족이고, 서로 연결된 하나의 동네입니다.  얼마전 캐나다에 산불이 일어났을 때 멀리 떨어져 있다고 생각했던 미시간에도 공기가 한 동안 심히 나빴던 것을 생각하면 결코 남의 얘기가 아니고, 온 지구가 한 동네라는 사실을 기억해야 합니다.

나 하나 잘한다고 전 세상이 변하겠는가…? 라고 생각할 수 있겠지만, 그 한 사람의 노력이 있어야 변화의 한 부분이 시작되는 것입니다.  이런 상황에서 전 세계 인구의 ¼ 이상 되는 기독교인들이 창조의 회복 또한 하나님 나라 건설의 귀한 자세임을 기억하면서 크리스천이 공적 책임을 지는 자세로 아껴 쓰고, 나눠 쓰고, 바꿔 쓰고, 다시 쓰고, 고쳐 쓰는 그런 자세를 갖는 다면 조금이라도 지구 온난화를 막을 수 있지 않을까 생각됩니다.

저 자신 부터 이런 마음을 물병을 갖고 다니기 시작하였습니다.  일회용품을 가능하면 줄여 쓰려고 어디를 가든 물병을 들고 다니려고 애를 쓰고 있습니다.

교회적으로도 이런 나눔과 교육을 자체적으로 행하고, 또 서로 격려하며, 일회용품 줄이기 등과 같은 작은 실천부터 하나 하나 실천하며 나아가면 좋겠습니다. 

하나의 지구를 함께 사용하고, 같은 공기와 같은 물을 나누는 지구촌 한가족의 삶을 살아가는 우리입니다.  네팔과 티벳에서 얼음이 놀아서 진흙 홍수를 별안간 맞게 된 분들의 상황은 저 자신의 책임도 있음을 절감하려고 합니다.  함께 아파하고, 함께 복구와 회복을 위해 간절히 기도하고, 마음과 상황을 과정에 힘을 함께 나누기를 원합니다.

Even If It Seems Small, Let Us Take One Step at a Time

I heard the news that a massive flood occurred in Nepal on August 26. As of August 27, newspapers are reporting that at least 362 people have died and more than 1,400 are missing, with the possibility of additional flooding in the days ahead.

The important point is that this flood was not simply the result of heavy rainfall. Rather, ice in the glacier-covered Himalayan region melted, causing glaciers and rocks to block rivers. As the water level rose, embankments eventually gave way, and the overflowing rivers swept into residential areas downstream.

Therefore, even though we cannot say that global warming was the direct cause of this particular flood, it is certainly true that global warming had an indirect influence. And as glaciers continue to melt, the possibility of more frequent disasters of this kind is likely to increase.

To think that global warming is someone else’s problem, something happening in another country or something that belongs to the distant future, is an extremely selfish attitude. As Christians who hold a Reformed perspective and understand that the restoration of creation is also part of God’s work of salvation, we should take these areas of life very seriously and do our very best to live responsibly.

The entire world is one family, and we live in one interconnected neighborhood. When wildfires occurred in Canada some time ago, even Michigan—though we thought it was far away—experienced seriously unhealthy air for a period of time. This reminds us that these are never simply someone else’s problems. We need to remember that the whole earth is, in a real sense, one neighborhood.

We may think, “If I do my part, how could the whole world possibly change?” But every change has to begin somewhere, and the efforts of even one person can become part of that change.

In this situation, if Christians—who make up more than one-fourth of the world’s population—remember that the restoration of creation is also an important part of building the Kingdom of God, and if we take our public responsibility seriously by using less, sharing more, reusing, repurposing, recycling, and repairing rather than replacing, perhaps we can contribute, even in a small way, to slowing global warming.

I have started with myself. I have begun carrying a reusable water bottle with me wherever I go, making an effort to reduce the use of disposable products whenever possible.

As a church, I hope we can also engage in this kind of sharing and education among ourselves, encourage one another, and move forward by putting into practice one small step at a time—starting with simple things such as reducing our use of disposable products.

Even if it seems small, let us take one step at a time.
