(이사야 39:1-8) 영적 근시

(이사야 39:1-8)

히스기야 왕은 병들어 죽게 되었을 때 하나님께 간절히 기도했고, 하나님의 은혜로 치유와 회복을 경험했습니다(38장). 회복을 허락하신 하나님께 감사해야 할 때였습니다. 그러나 이때 결코 잊지 말아야 할 사실이 있습니다. 치유와 회복의 근원과 능력은 하나님께 로부터 왔으며, 자신은 여전히 하나님을 의지해야 하는 연약한 존재라는 사실입니다. 

그런데 회복 이후 히스기야의 영적 분별력이 흐려지기 시작합니다. 바벨론 왕 므로닥발라단이 히스기야의 회복을 축하하며 위로와 선물을 보내왔을 때, 히스기야는 기뻐하며 왕궁의 보물 창고와 무기고를 비롯하여 자신의 모든 소유를 남김없이 보여 줍니다(2). 

이는 회복을 경험한 사람에게 찾아올 수 있는 영적 나태와 교만의 모습을 보여 줍니다. 자신이 가진 모든 능력과 회복의 근원이 하나님께 있었기에, 계속해서 하나님을 바라보고 하나님만을 의지해야 했습니다. 

그러나 히스기야의 눈과 마음은 어느 순간 하나님보다 회복의 결과에, 하나님보다 자신이 누리고 있는 힘과 안정에 더 머물게 되었습니다. 더 안타까운 것은 이사야 선지자가 그를 책망하고 질문했음에도 히 스기야가 자신의 잘못을 깊이 깨닫지 못했다는 사실입니다(3-4). 

결국 이사야는 히스기야에게 그의 소유와 자녀 세대가 장차 바벨론으로 옮겨지고 큰 어려움을 겪게 될 것이라고 경고합니다(5-7). 그럼에도 히스기야는 그 일이 자신의 당대에는 일어나지 않을 것이라는 사실을 듣고 감사하다고 말합니다(8). 

자신의 현재의 평안만 바라보고 다음 세대가 겪게 될 아픔과 하나님의 뜻을 깊이 바라보지 못하는 영적 근시안의 모습을 보여 주는 것입니다. 

우리도 하나님의 은혜로 회복과 축복을 경험할 때 더욱 조심해야 합니다. 하나님의 은혜로 얻은 것을 바라보다가 정작 은혜를 베푸신 하나님을 잊어버리지는 않는지, 현재의 평안에 만족하다가 다음 세대 와 하나님의 나라를 바라보는 시야를 잃어버리지는 않는지 돌아보아야 합니다. 

나의 영적 눈은 밝습니까?  나는 지금 하나님을 바라보고 있습니까, 아니면 하나님께서 주신 것 들을 바라보고 있습니까? 

나는 현재의 평안만 바라보는 영적 근시안을 가지고 있지는 않습니까?

(Isaiah 39:1–8)

When King Hezekiah became sick and was near death, he earnestly prayed to God, and by God’s grace, he experienced healing and restoration (ch. 38). It was a time for him to give thanks to God for allowing him to recover. Yet there was something he should never have forgotten: the source and power of his healing and restoration came from God, and he himself was still a weak and dependent person who needed to rely on God.

However, after his recovery, Hezekiah’s spiritual discernment began to grow dim. When Merodach-Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to congratulate and comfort Hezekiah because of his recovery, Hezekiah was pleased and showed the Babylonian envoys everything he possessed, including the treasures of his palace and his armory. He left nothing out (v. 2).

This reveals a picture of the spiritual complacency and pride that can come to those who have experienced restoration and blessing. Since the source of all his strength and restoration was God, He should have continued to look to God and depend on Him alone.

But at some point, Hezekiah’s eyes and heart became focused more on the results of his restoration than on God, and more on the power and security he now enjoyed than on the God who had given them to him. Even more sadly, although the prophet Isaiah confronted him and questioned him about what he had done, Hezekiah did not seem to deeply recognize the seriousness of his mistake (vv. 3–4).

Eventually, Isaiah warned Hezekiah that his possessions and even his descendants would one day be carried away to Babylon and that they would experience great hardship (vv. 5–7). Yet when Hezekiah heard that these things would not happen during his own lifetime, he simply responded by saying that the word of the Lord was good (v. 8).

This reveals a picture of spiritual shortsightedness—looking only at one’s present peace and comfort while failing to see deeply the pain the next generation would face and the greater purposes of God.

We, too, need to be especially careful when we experience restoration and blessing by God’s grace. We need to examine ourselves and ask: As I look at what I have received by God’s grace, am I forgetting the God who has given me that grace? As I become satisfied with my present peace and comfort, am I losing sight of the next generation and the kingdom of God?

Are my spiritual eyes clear and discerning?

Am I looking to God right now, or am I looking at the things God has given me?

Do I have spiritual shortsightedness that causes me to see only my present peace and comfort, while failing to see the next generation and God’s greater purposes?
