A Steep Learning Curve
When God called Jeremiah,
Jeremiah answered, “Ah, Sovereign
Lord, I do not know how to speak; I
am only a child” (1:6). We know how
he felt. We often feel at a
kindergarten level in the Khmer
language, having to simplify what we
say to fit our limited vocabulary. Joyce
has particularly felt that way as
preparing a unit of training on
marriage and family with the Women’s
Commission of the Evangelical
Fellowship of Cambodia.
What does it mean to honor
parents where respect is connected
with the duties of ancestor worship at
some point? How can husbands and
wives nurture their relationship when
they live in extended families in very
close quarters? What does a Christian
do when a Buddhist family member

SECOND TRAINING WITH CRWRC IN SVAY RIENG PROVINCE
We led a second training session for rural
pastors and church leaders in Svay Rieng
province last weekend. We chose to teach on
marriage and family to develop our
communication and test the training materials.
The group was very eager to learn and had
grown since the last session. They made specific
requests to have something in the area
specifically for women and for youth. The need
for solid training on Christian family was
confirmed. People want to learn to live out
their lives in a Christ-like way at a very
practical level, but the spiritual and physical
environment, the worldview and culture
make it very difficult.
We visited a mission family on the way
back. They have been in Cambodia for
about 20 years. The husband started in

dies? What word of hope can help a person living in
an abusive situation where support systems are
scarce?... Though still a work in progress, the training
material has been translated into Khmer. Working on
it, especially with the input of the Women’s
commission staff has been difficult, but also a blessing
in that it forced Joyce onto a steeper learning curve
than she might otherwise have followed. The regional
training is scheduled for October in Phnom Penh with
a second one in Battambang in November. Please pray
that God will take what we give and make it a blessing.

forestry and agriculture and the wife is a nurse. But they
have been shifting to focusing on training Christian values
to village children. They named the status of women—
often valued as workers, but not for themselves--and
failure of men to take moral and spiritual responsibility as
the biggest concerns.
We keep relying on God’s promise to “put words in
our mouth” (Jeremiah 1: 9) and give us wisdom and
strength. We are so thankful that God is faithful. We are
also thankful to be in partnership with CRWRC and
receiving valuable support and advice from their staff too.
Please pray for our continuing relationship with this group
as we have entered a pilot agreement with CRWRC for
the next year.

The mission couple said “it’s not difficult to figure out
what to do, but to figure out what not to do.” Where
should we focus our ministry? We need continuing
prayer to use our time and gifts wisely and effectively,
even as we continue our Khmer language study.
Gil has been working with the EFC central office staff
discipleship and administrative advice. He has also been
working with a group of young Christian leaders who are
learning to integrate faith with holistic development.
He has starting following-up with some pastors who are
participating in the Timothy Leadership Training
Institute. He has been invited to disciple recent college
grads starting house church cell groups for young people
and college students in Phnom Penh. Joyce has been
supporting the work of a Cambodian friend starting a
local Christian non-profit organization to help with
employment and vocational training. There are
opportunities to disciple young Cambodian women that
she has not yet stepped in to. Some days it is hard to
believe that we haven’t even been here a year yet. Please
cry out with us for Jesus to be very close to us and our
family and to guide us every step we take.
