(창세기 8:1-22)

“하나님이 노아와 그와 함께 방주에 있는 모든 들짐승과 가축을 기억하사 하나님이 바람을 땅 위에 불게 하시매 물이 줄어들었고…”(1)

하나님은 어디나 계십니다.  그냥 계시지 않고, 하나님의 형상으로 창조된 인간을 보시고, 염려하시고, 보살피심으로 ‘함께’ 하십니다.  방주 안에 있는 노아와 그 가족들, 그리고 짐승들과 가축을 하나님은 ‘기억’하십니다(1).

그리고 비를 그치게 하시고, 방주를 물위를 움직이게 하는 상황에서 뭍에 머물게 하십니다(4).  매일 매일 시간의 흐름 따라 물이 점점 말라가고, 지면에 다시 동물들과 사람이 살 수 있는 상황으로 이끄십니다(6-14).

그리고 다시 재창조의 상황으로 이끌어 주신 뒤, 생육하고 번성의 명령과 약속을 주십니다(17-19).  죄와 타협이 없으시고 은혜로 인도하시는 하나님께서 재창조를 통해 하나님 나라의 새로운 모습으로 다시 시작케 하십니다.  이 길은 하나님만을 향한 전심의 마음, 믿음의 마음, 예배의 자세로만 나아갈 때 이룩됩니다.

그래서 노아와 그 가족들은 방주에서 나온 뒤 가장 먼저 한 일로 제단을 쌓음으로 예배를 드리게 됩니다(20).  이 예배에 하나님은 사람으로 말미암아 땅을 저주하지 않으신다는 약속을 하십니다.  온전한 피조 영역의 보존을 위하시는 하나님의 마음을 알 수 있습니다.  그리고 창조 질서의 회복과 동시에 하나님은 계속 ‘쉬지 않고 일하실 것’을 약속하십니다(22).

사람에게 다시 한번 더 이 땅에서의 하나님 나라 백성으로서의 삶을 가능케 하시고, 시작케 하시는 것입니다.  하나님의 이 재창조 속에는 하나님의 귀한 사랑, 은혜가 담겨져 있습니다.  방주라는 하나님의 은혜를 통해 재창조, 즉 구원 받았다면, 이제부터는 삶의 모든 상황, 순간을 ‘은혜로만’ 시작하고, 기억하고, 의지하고, 나아가야 할 것입니다.

노아가 방주에서 제일 먼저 나와서 제단을 쌓은 것 처럼, 오늘 귀한 주일, 은혜만을 기억하며, 그 은혜에 감사하는 예배로 나아가고, 삶의 매 순간을 은혜로만 살아갈 때, 우리의 삶 속에서도 재창조의 감격 속에 하나님 나라 건설의 삶이 계속될 줄 믿습니다!

(Genesis 8:1–22)

“But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided…” (v. 1).

God is present everywhere. He is not merely present in a distant or passive way; rather, He is with us as He looks upon humanity created in His image, cares for us, and watches over us. God remembered Noah, his family inside the ark, and all the animals and livestock with them (v. 1).

He then caused the rain to stop and, in the midst of the ark drifting upon the waters, allowed it to come to rest on dry ground (v. 4). Day by day, as time passed, the waters gradually receded, and God led the world back to a condition in which animals and human beings could once again live upon the earth (vv. 6–14).

After leading them into this renewed, re-created state, God gave again the command and promise to be fruitful and multiply (vv. 17–19). The God who does not compromise with sin, yet who graciously guides His people, brings about a new beginning for the kingdom of God through this work of re-creation. This path is accomplished only when one moves forward with a wholehearted devotion to God, a heart of faith, and an attitude of worship.

Therefore, the very first thing Noah and his family did after coming out of the ark was to build an altar and offer worship (v. 20). In response to this worship, God made a promise that He would never again curse the ground because of humankind. Here we see God’s heart to preserve the whole created order. At the same time as the restoration of creation’s order, God promises that He will continue to work without ceasing (v. 22).

In this way, God once again makes possible and initiates life on this earth as His kingdom people. Within this divine re-creation are found God’s precious love and grace. If we have been saved—re-created—through the grace of God symbolized by the ark, then from this point on we must begin every situation and every moment of life with grace alone, remembering grace, relying on grace, and moving forward by grace.

Just as Noah’s first act upon leaving the ark was to build an altar, so on this precious Lord’s Day, as we remember only God’s grace and come before Him in worship with thanksgiving for that grace, and as we choose to live every moment of our lives by grace alone, I believe that within our own lives the joy of re-creation will continue, and a life devoted to building the kingdom of God will carry on.
