제목: 예수가 보이네! (Reflection of Christ)

이주일 전에 한 주간 동안 한인 목회자 컨퍼런스에 다녀왔습니다. Two weeks ago, I was gone for a week-long Korean pastors’ conference.

첫 날 집회 때 복음과 관련된 강의를 들었는데, 강사 목사님께서 사용하신 PPT의 첫 화면이 다음과 같은 내용이었습니다. On the first night, a guest speaker talked of the gospel, sharing this powerpoint slide.

[슬라이드] ‘나의 사역, 내가 섬기는 교회를 위하는 것인가?  하나님 나라를 위하는 것인가?’

이 슬라이드를 보면서 저는 속으로 잔잔하지만, 강한 충격을 받았습니다. As I watched the slide, I experienced quite a shock inside of me.

‘나의 사역, 내가 섬기는 교회를 위하는 것인가?  하나님 나라를 위하는 것인가?’ 라는 질문에 저는 전자에 더 많은 무게 중심을 두고 있었던 것이었습니다. To the question of whether I treated the gospel ‘for my ministry and my church or for God’s kingdom?’ I knew that I was focusing more on the former rather than the latter.

강사 목사님께서 그 뒤로 나눠 주신 강의는 복음을 제대로 깨달은 삶에 대한 깨우침을 강력하게 가르쳐 주는 그런 귀한 내용이었습니다. The guest speaker taught us more powerfully to realize the life that was saturated with the gospel.

복음에 대해서 알았지만(know about the Good News), 복음적 삶(Life Proclaiming the Good News)을 제대로 살지는 못한 저 자신을 돌아보게 된 매우 귀한 가르침이었습니다. It was a great teaching that helped me to reflect on myself. I knew about the Good News, but I failed to live a life proclaiming the Good News.

그래서 지난 수요 성경공부 때 이 부분을 우리 성도님들과 나눴는데, 그 때에도 저 자신 왠지 모를 기쁨과 자유함과 생명력을 깨달을 수 있었습니다. As I shared it at the Bible study last Wednesday, I felt indescribable joy, freedom, and life. 

그렇지 않습니까?  좋은 소식은 전하면 전할 수록 더 기쁘고 더 감사한 것이기에, 그 좋은 소식, 즉 복음을 기억할 수록, 나눌 수록 더 확인되고, 더 기쁨이 커지는 그런 것이 진정한 복음의 생명력 아닐까요? You will agree that the more you share the good news, the more joyful and thankful you shall be. Is it not the life of the gospel, in which you will be more certain and joyful as you remember and share the Good News?

그리고 이번 수요일에 이 내용을 한 번 더 나누고, 그 뒤로 연결되는 부분을 계속 나누려고 합니다. I am planning to share it again at the upcoming Bible study.

이렇게 중요한 복음을 가장 잘 설명해 준 성경 구절이 바로 요한복음 3:16 입니다. It is John 3:16 that best explains such an important good news. 

그래서 운동 경기장을 가면 자주 이 구절을 들고 있는 분들을 보게 됩니다. You may see some people holding the sign with this famous verse.

왜 이 구절이 복음을 나타내는 구절일까요?  이 구절의 핵심은 어떤 부분일까요? What does this verse say about the Good News?

[본문] (같이 읽기) (민 21장) (8-9절)

이 구절은 구약 민수기 21장 광야 백성들이 가나안 들어가기 전에 겪었던 사건, 즉 길이 험하다고 하나님께 불평하다 불뱀에 물려 죽게 되었다가Today’s text describes an incident which the Israelites experienced on their route to Canaan. They spoke against God and died from the venomous snakes that God sent among them.

놋뱀 보면서 살게 된 장면과 연결되는 장면입니다. They then repented to God, who provided a bronze snake for them to look at and live.

그래서 거듭남, 즉 구원에 대해서 질문하러 온 바리새인이자 부자인 니고데모를 향하여 예수님께서는 구약의 이 놋뱀사건을 통해서 살게 된 장면과 함께 연결해서 설명해 주심으로 복음의 참된 의미를 깨닫게 해 주셨던 것입니다. When Nicodemus, a rich Pharisee, came to Jesus and asked about salvation, Jesus used the illustration of the bronze snake and taught him the meaning of being born again—salvation.

저는 이 구약과 신약의 본문을 묵상하면서 복음이 복음으로 제대로 이해되도록 돕는 (우리가 쉽게 혹은 자주 잊어버릴 수 있는) 세가지 세가지 관점을 정리하게 되었습니다. As I meditated on these verses, I summed them up with three views, which will help us to understand the gospel.

다른 관점들이 있을 수 있지만, 앞으로 복음을 복음으로 이해하고, 살아가기 위해서 이 세가지는 꼭 기억하시고, 묵상하시고, 적용해야 한다고 믿습니다. I believe these three perspectives will help you to understand the gospel properly and to live it out.

첫째는, 구원, 즉 복음이란 죽음의 상황에서 살게 되었다는 사실입니다. First, salvation, or the good news, means being alive in the midst of death.

우리가 자주 착각하는 사실이 있습니다. There is a fact that we often misunderstand.

그것은 지금 삶에서 좀 더 잘 살고, 좀 더 능력있게 사는 것을 구원이라고 생각한다는 사실입니다. We tend to mistake a rich and powerful life for salvation.

아마 니고데모도 그렇게 생각했던 것 같습니다. Perhaps so does Nicodemus.

자신은 바리새인이고, 자신은 최선을 다해서 열심히 산 사람이기에 그런 상황에서 구원을 생각했을 수도 있습니다. He may have thought of being saved because he was a Pharisee and did his best to live a full life.

그러나 예수님은 그런 니고데모를 향하여 광야에서 놋뱀이 들린 것처럼 자신도 들려야 하고, 그런 자신을 믿는자가 구원을 얻게 된다고 말씀하십니다. But Jesus told Nicodemus that he himself must be lifted up just as the bronze snake was lifted in the desert and explained to him that whoever believed in him would be saved.

광야의 상황은 불뱀에 물려서 죽게 된 상황입니다. Life in the desert was being bitten by venomous snakes and being swallowed up into death.

그냥 가만 있게 되면 그 불뱀에 물려 모두다 죽게 되는 그런 처절한 상황입니다. If they just stood there doing nothing, all the Israelites were on the verge of being bitten by the snakes and dying.

구원은 이런 처절한 인간의 상황에서 있어야 되는 그런 구원을 말하는 것입니다. Salvation is salvation only when it takes place when people are in this kind of desperate situation.

내가 지금까지 살아왔던 그런 삶이 결코 나에게 올바른 것이 아니었다는 그런 깨달음을 갖게 되었을 때 갖게 되는 그런 삶을 말합니다. It must happen when we realize that the lives that we are leading are not correct living.

죽음의 상황에서 구하게 되는 삶, 죽음의 상황에서 맛보게 되는 구원의 길, 그 길을 향한 열망은 그 어떤 것과도 바꿀 수 없는 그런 열망이고 갈망일 것입니다. So, we come to desire the way of salvation that we seek and taste in such a desperate situation as death.

지금 우리가 처한 상황이 그런 상황임을 우리는 기억해야 할 것입니다. We need to remember that we are now right in this situation.  

자주 이런 질문을 받습니다. People often ask…

법 없이도 살 만한 사람이 지옥간다는 것은 너무나 이상한 것이 아니냐고… Isn’t it strange to accept that a good person shall go to hell?

그러나 이는 우리의 착각입니다. However, this is our misunderstanding.

하나님을 떠난 것이 인간의 죄이고, 그 죄는 가장 큰 지옥의 고통임을… It is humankind’s sin that we left to be away from God, and the punishment for that sin is the great pain of hell.

우리는 이미 모두 지옥에 있는 존재라는 사실을 기억해야 합니다. We should remember that all of us were once in hell.

이 죽음, 이 지옥에서 벗어나는 것이 구원임을 기억할 때, 얼마다 귀하고, 얼마나 필요하고, 얼마나 기쁜 일일까요…? When we think of salvation as being freed from hell, how great, necessary, and wonderful it is to have salvation!

구원은 이렇게 처절한 죽음을 벗어나는 것이기에 모두에게 반드시 필요한 것이고, 이 구원을 우리 모두는 열망해야 합니다. Because salvation means being freed from death, it is absolutely necessary for all, and we should all desire this salvation.

둘째는, 놋뱀이 되신 예수 그리스도를 묵상하는 것입니다. Second, we need to meditate on Jesus Christ, who became the bronze snake for us.

모세는 불뱀에 물려 죽게 된 이스라엘 백성을 위하여 놋뱀을 만들어 장대에 매달고 이 놋뱀을 보는 자는 살게 된다고 했습니다. Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

그리고 예수님은 자신이 장대에 매달린 놋뱀처럼 십자가에 달려 죽게 될 것을 말씀하십니다. Jesus said that he would be lifted up on the cross and die, just like the bronze snake.

그런데 예수님이 뱀과 연계되는 그런 말씀을 하실 때 저는 좀 의아스러웠습니다. But I came to wonder when Jesus likened his death to the snake.

사실 뱀은 죄를 짓게 한 그런 존재 아닙니까?  뱀은 가장 저주스러운 상징 아닙니까? In fact, isn’t the snake that caused a sin to happen and became the symbol of the cursed?

죄를 짓게 된 그 뱀의 자리, 죄 지은 자의 자리에 실제로 누가 있어야 합니까? Who should take the place of the snake that represents sin?

바로 여러분과 제가 있어야 하지 않겠습니까? Isn’t it you and me?

그런데 그 자리에 주님께서 대신 달려 죽으신 것입니다. But Jesus took our place by being crucified on the cross and dying for us.

나를 대신해서 죽음으로 죄의 값을 치러 주신 것을 은혜라고 합니다. We call it grace that Jesus died for us to pay for our sins.

뱀이 징그럽고, 무섭고, 괴롭게 보이듯이, 십자가에 달려 죽으신 예수님의 그 십자가는 원래 이렇게 고상한 것이 아닙니다. As the snake looks disgusting, scary, and terrible, the cross, on which Jesus died, was not noble at all.

가장 더러운 것이고, 가장 무서운 것이고, 모든 사람들이 외면하는 자리인 것입니다. It was the foulest, scariest, and ugliest place to be.

그 자리에 예수님께서 나 위하여, 나 대신 죽으심으로 매달려 계신 것입니다. On that filthy place, Jesus died for me and in place of me.

이것을 은혜라고 합니다. We call it grace.

이 강대상에 놓여진 십자가를 보며 늘 생각합니다. Whenever I look at the cross on the podium, I always remind myself as follows.

이것은 단순한 장식용이 아닙니다.  이 십자가는 울퉁불퉁, 험하게 만들어졌습니다. The cross is not simply a decoration. The real cross was made roughly and crudely. 

그리고 이 자리에 내가 있어야 하는데, 나 대신에 주님께서 계셨음을 생각할 때… 은혜로 이 예배당에 들어서게 됩니다. (예배당 입구, 구약 회막 입구) Whenever I think of Jesus taking my place and dying on the cross, I enter this place in his grace.   

세번째 묵상의 내용이 있습니다.  그것은 그 십자가를 계속 바라보아야 한다는 것입니다. Third, we should continually look to the cross.    

가장 큰 어둠의 상황에서 길을 밝혀 줄 손전등을 찾았습니다.  그런데, 그 뒤 손전등을 끄고 나아갈 사람은 아무도 없을 것입니다. Let us say that we found a flashlight in a pitch-dark alley. Nobody would then turn the flashlight off and continue to wander in the dark.

이러한 상황을 오늘의 신약 본문 끝 부분에 다음과 같이 표현하였습니다. Today’s text explains this.

“진리를 따르는 자는 빛으로 오나니 이는 그 행위가 하나님 안에서 행한 것임을 나타내려 하시니라”(요 3:21). 진리를 따르는 삶이 빛으로 오게 되고, 그 결과는 하나님 안에서 행한 것, 즉 하나님을 증거하는 삶이라고 본문에 되어 있습니다. “But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” (John 3:21) Those who love the truth will come into the light and, as a result, put God on display.

여기서 진리를 ‘따르는 삶’을 각 번역본 따라 ‘lives by the truth, practice, 따르는, 행하는’ 등으로 번역되었습니다. The “life of following” the truth is translated into the life of “living by the truth or practicing the truth.”

공동번역이 제일 원어를 따라 잘 번역된 것 같습니다.  공동번역에서는 ‘따라서 사는 사람은’이라고 되어 있습니다. In the Holy Bible Common Translation, it is written as “those who live by the truth.”

그렇습니다.  죽음에서 벗어난 사람이, 십자가의 은혜로 구원받은 사람이, 이 은혜를 결코 잊어버릴 수가 없을 것입니다. Indeed. Those who escape from death and receive salvation through the cross will never forget this grace.

전에도 한번 말씀드린 적이 있지만, 저는 목사 안수를 받기 전에 치룬 시험에서 다른 과목은 다 통과 점수가 되었는데, 한 과목이 3점, 즉 한 문제 모자란 상황이었습니다. I shared this story before. I had to take the pastor’s education and qualification examination before ordination, and I passed all the subjects except this one subject in which I was just one question shy of passing.  

필기 시험 성적이라는 지식적 영역도 중요했지만, 더 중요했던 것은 구두 시험, 즉 목회자로서의 자세가 더 중요한 것이 목회자 안수받기 전의 중요한 점검 사항이었습니다. Written exams were of course important, but oral exams were more important to examine the candidates’ attitudes as they prepared for ministry.

그 때 심사를 해서 통과시켜 주신 목사님들께서 하신 말씀이 평생 목회를 하면서 하나님을 철저하게 의지하는 그 자세를 가진다면 통과시켜 주시겠다는 말씀을 들으면서, The pastors, who were judges, graciously let me pass the exam, encouraging me that I should completely depend on God throughout the ministry.

저 자신에 대한 철저한 겸손, 그리고 그와 함께 하나님을 향한 믿음, 의지, 은혜를 잊지 않는 것이 저의 목회 평생 자세가 되었음을 고백합니다. At that moment, I promised myself that I should be humble, trust and depend on God, and never forget his grace. This has been my attitude throughout ministry.

그렇습니다.  저의 신앙인으로서, 그리고 목회자로서 가장 중요한 자세는 한 순간도 빠짐없이, 계속해서 그 십자가 은혜를 의지하고, 바라보는 것입니다. Yes. The most important attitude that I must have as a believer and pastor is that I should always and continually depend on and look to the grace of the cross.

그리고 이는 예수 그리스도를 삶의 현장 속에서 ‘계속’ 따르는 삶을 말합니다. This is the life of continually following Jesus Christ in our own lives.

그 결과가 무엇일까요? What will be the result of following Jesus?

바로 진리되시는 예수 그리스도만을 계속 보고, 따르게 되기에 그 안에 예수가 보이게 되는 것입니다. We will reveal Jesus Christ in our lives as we continue to look to and follow Him, who is the Truth.

즉, 죽음에서 벗어났기에, 은혜를 깨달았기에, 계속 예수님을 바라보기에…. 그의 삶 안에서, 그의 눈 안에서, 그의 손과 발을 통하여 예수가 보이게 되는 것입니다. Since we received grace, being saved from death, and continue to look to him, we come to reveal Jesus Christ in our lives, in our eyes, and through our hands and feet.

마치 큰 바위 얼굴의 얘기처럼, 우리 안에 죽음을 이긴 구원의 모습이, 은혜의 모습이, 십자가의 모습이 보이기 시작하는 것입니다. As in the story of the Great Stone Face, we shall begin to reflect salvation, grace, and the cross in our lives.

나의 삶에 예수가 보입니까? Does my life reflect Jesus?

우리 교회에 예수가 보입니까? Does our church demonstrate Jesus?

[성찬] 내가 너희에게 전한 것은 주께 받은 것이니 곧 주 예수께서 잡히시던 밤에 떡을 가지사 / 축사하시고 떼어 이르시되 이것은 너희를 위하는 내 몸이니 이것을 행하여 나를 기념하라 하시고 / 식후에 또한 그와 같이 잔을 가지시고 이르시되 이 잔은 내 피로 세운 새 언약이니 이것을 행하여 마실 때마다 나를 기념하라 하셨으니 / For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, / and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." / In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 너희가 이 떡을 먹으며 이 잔을 마실 때마다 주의 죽으심을 그가 오실 때까지 전하는 것이니라 / For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

예수님의 살과 피를 받을 때, 믿음으로 받을 때, 내 안에 예수가 보이기를 기도드립니다. We pray that Jesus will be seen in us as we receive his bread and cup with faith.

[찬양] 예수가 보이네-이 찬양을 믿음으로 우리가 함께 부르기 원합니다. Let us sing this song with faith. (예수가 보이고, 나의 삶을 통해 예수가 보이기를 원하는 마음) (I can see Jesus / Jesus will be seen through my life)

[기도] 삶의 매 순간을 십자가의 보혈을 의지하며 살아가게 하소서.  내 삶에, 예수만 보이게 하옵소서! Let us rely on the blood of the cross at all times. Let my life reveal Jesus only. 

[묵상 질문]

묵상 질문 1) ‘구원받았다’라는 말은 어떤 의미일까요?  오늘 본문을 통해, 그리고 들은 메시지를 토대로 함께 나눠 봅시다. What does it mean to “be saved”? Please share your thoughts with one another based on the text and the sermon message.

묵상 질문 2) 나는 구원받은 사람입니까?  구원받은 사람으로서 계속 예수 그리스도를 따르는  ‘현재 진행형의 신앙’으로 살아가고 있습니까? Am I saved? As a saved person, am I continually following Jesus Christ in my present life?

묵상 질문 3) 나의 삶에, 우리 교회에 예수가 보입니까?  예수가 보이기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 할까요? Do you think Jesus is visible and believable in our lives and in our church? What do you think we should do to reveal Jesus?

하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
