[본문] 에베소서 Eph. 2:1-10

1. 그는 허물과 죄로 죽었던 너희를 살리셨도다

2. 그 때에 너희는 그 가운데서 행하여 이 세상 풍조를 따르고 공중의 권세 잡은 자를 따랐으니 곧 지금 불순종의 아들들 가운데서 역사하는 영이라

3. 전에는 우리도 다 그 가운데서 우리 육체의 욕심을 따라 지내며 육체와 마음의 원하는 것을 하여 다른 이들과 같이 본질상 진노의 자녀이었더니

4. 긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신 그 큰 사랑을 인하여

5. 허물로 죽은 우리를 그리스도와 함께 살리셨고 （너희는 은혜로 구원을 받은 것이라）

6. 또 함께 일으키사 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉히시니

7. 이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 자비하심으로써 그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을 오는 여러 세대에 나타내려 하심이라

8. 너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라

9. 행위에서 난 것이 아니니 이는 누구든지 자랑하지 못하게 함이라

10. 우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라

 

1. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

2. in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

3. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

4. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

5. made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.

6. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

7. in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

8. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--

9. not by works, so that no one can boast.

10. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

1.    올해 저희 교회가 거의 10여년에 한번씩 행하는 비전 재정립의 해로 정하고, 기도하며, 일년 동안 재정립하려고 합니다. This year, our church is planning to reestablish our vision, with prayer, throughout the year.

2.    비전 재정립을 위해서 저희가 기본적으로 가져야 할 기준이 바로 말씀입니다. The foundation for vision reestablishment is the Word of God, which we need to adhere to fundamentally.

3.    그래서 목회자들이 그러한 관점으로 주일 말씀을 가능하면 준비해서 전하고 있습니다. Therefore, pastors prepare and deliver sermons from that perspective whenever possible.

4.    이를 위해서 종교 개혁가들의 다섯가지 슬로건을 작년말부터 함께 가능할 때 나누고 있습니다. To this end, we have been sharing the five slogans of the reformers since the end of last year.

 

5.    [그림] 첫번째 슬로건은 ‘오직 성경’입니다. The first slogan is “Scripture alone.”   

6.    그렇습니다.  성경 66권으로 계시는 완성 되었고, 그 외의 꿈이나 환상 등이 오늘날에도 가능하지만, 이는 모두 성경을 토대로 검증되어야 합니다. The Scripture, consisting of 66 books, is complete, and while other dreams or visions may still be possible today, they must all be verified based on the Scripture.  

7.    왜냐하면 저희에게 주어진 성경에 하나님께서 우리를 위해 말씀하실 모든 내용이 다 담겨져 있기 때문입니다. For the Bible contains everything God wants to communicate to us.

8.    성경이 이토록 중요하다면 매일 성경, 성경 일독, 각종 성경 공부 등을 통한 말씀 공부에 힘을 쏟기를 원합니다. As the Bible is so important, we may need to invest our efforts in studying the Word through various disciplines, including daily reading and meditation.

9.    성경만 보는 것을 말하지 않습니다.  성경은 창문입니다.  성경을 통해 세상을 제대로 보게 됩니다. It says not just to look at the Bible. The Bible is like a window. Through the Bible, you see the world properly.

10. [그림] 두번째 슬로건은 ‘오직 그리스도’입니다. The second slogan is “Christ alone.”

11. [그림] 이 그림이 기억 나실 것입니다.  그리스도의 십자가로 성소로 들어가고, 지성소로 들어갈 수 있습니다. You may remember this picture. Through the cross of Christ, we are enabled to enter the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place.

12. 그리고 그리스도의 십자가로 닫혀진 모든 관계를 회복할 수 있습니다. The cross also enables us to restore all broken relationships.

13. 저 개인적으로 관계가 막힐 때 점검해 봅니다.  그리스도가 계신지…? Personally, I examine to see if Christ is present in my life when I experience broken relationships.

 

14. [그림] 세번째 슬로건이 오늘 주제인 ‘오직 은혜’입니다. The third one is “Grace alone,” which is today’s theme.

15. 우리는 은혜라는 말을 많이 사용합니다. We use the word grace a lot.

16. ‘우리 은혜롭게 합시다’ ‘오늘 은혜 많이 받았습니다’ 등 등… We say things like “Let’s be gracious” and “We received a lot of grace today.”

17. 아마 저희 공동체 안에서도 영어 이름이 ‘은혜’(grace)라는 이름도 있을 것입니다. There may be some people whose name is Grace in our community.

18. 그런데 성경이 말하는 이 은혜는 어떤 의미일까요? What is then the meaning of this grace in the Bible?

19. [본문읽기] (엡 2:1-10) 1-7절까지 봉독자가 한/영으로 읽을 때 함께 눈으로 읽으시고, 8-10절은 동시에 한/영으로 읽도록 하겠습니다. Readers will read verses 1-7 and then we all will read verses 8-10 together in English and Korean.

20. 읽을 때 ‘죽음’이라는 표현과 ‘은혜’라는 표현이 몇 번이나, 어떻게 표현되었는지를 한번 보시면서 말씀 봉독에 동참하겠습니다. As you read along the text, try to see how often such words as “death” and “grace” appear in those verses.

 

21. [말씀 봉독-일어서서]

22. 본문 1절에 ‘허물과 죄로 죽었던 너희를 살리셨도다’라고 되어 있습니다. In verse 1, it says, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.”

23. 즉, 죽은 존재였다가 살아나는 것을 말합니다. It means all of us were dead but made alive.

24. 이 죽음은 육체적 죽음만을 의미하지 않고, 영적 죽음까지를 말합니다. This death not only signifies physical death but also spiritual death.

25. 이 영적 죽음을 2절에 ‘세상 풍조를 따르고’ ‘공중의 권세잡은 자를 따르는 삶’으로 말합니다(설명). This spiritual death is described in verse 2 as “following the ways of this world” and “following the ruler of the kingdom of the air.”

26. 이를 3절에 ‘본질상 진노의 자녀’라고 표현하였습니다.  In verse 3, it is referred to as “by nature children of wrath.”

27. 책망 중에 가장 무서운 책망은 하나님께서 우리를 향하여 내리시는 진노일 것입니다. The most terrifying wrath is the wrath that God directs towards us.

28. 우리의 존재 자체가 본질적으로 하나님의 진노를 받는 존재라고 성경은 말씀하고 있습니다. The Bible says that our existence itself is inherently subject to God’s wrath.

29. 그런데 이런 죽음의 존재를 다시 살려 주셨다고 성경은 말하고 있습니다. But the Bible also says that God made us alive even when we were dead in transgressions.

30. 이를 은혜로 구원 받았다고 하고, ‘그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을 나타낸다’고 하고(7), ‘그 은혜에 의하여 구원 받았다’(8)고 합니다. It says we have been saved by grace (v. 8), and God shows the incomparable riches of his grace (v. 7).

31. 즉, 은혜란 완전히 죽은 존재가 다시 살게 된 것, 이것을 은혜라고 하는 것입니다. Grace is the complete transformation of the dead into the living.

32. 단지, 제가 여러분들에게 큰 도움을 준다거나, 먹을 것 좀 나눠 준다거나 하는 정도가 아니라, 완전히 죽었는데, 살게 된 것,  이것을 은혜라고 한다는 말입니다. It is not just about giving a little help or sharing food, but about being completely dead but coming back to life. This is what we call grace.

33. 이는 은혜의 원어적 의미를 이해할 때 더 잘 이해할 수 있게 됩니다. Knowing the original meaning of grace helps us understand it better.

 

34. 은혜는 헬라어로 ‘카리스’라고 합니다.  그 뜻은 ‘선물’이라는 뜻입니다. Grace is called Charis in Greek, and its meaning is “gift.”

35. 여러분과 제가 다 죽게 되었는데, 그리스도께서 십자가에서 대신 죽으심으로 우리가 살게 되었습니다. You and I were completely dead, but we have been made alive through Christ’s death on the cross.

36. 그러면 그 그리스도의 죽으심의 값은 어느 정도 될까요? What would be the cost of his death on the cross?

37. 그 값을 계산할 수 있을까요? Can we possibly calculate the value?

38. 일론 머스크, 워렌 버핏, 아마존, 삼성, 3개 자동차 회사 등 모든 기업을 다 팔아도 우리가 육체적으로 뿐만 아니라 영적 영원한 죽음에서 살게 되는 값을 다 치룰 수 없을 것입니다. Even if we combine the values of Elon Musk, Warren Buffett, Amazon, Samsung, and all the car companies and sell them, we cannot pay the price for becoming alive both physically and spiritually.

39. 이 우주 전체를 다 바꾸어도 안 될 것입니다. Even the entire universe cannot pay for it.

40. 돈 주고 산다면 절대로 못 살 값입니다. It’s a value that money can never afford.

41. 그래서 하나님께서 어떻게 해 주신 것입니까? How did God provide this?

42. 돈 받지 않고, 우리를 사랑하셔서 그냥, 거저 주셨습니다. He asked for nothing but gave it to us out of his love for us.

43. 이것이 은혜의 원래 의미인 ‘카리스’ 즉 ‘선물’입니다. This is the original meaning of grace, Charis, or gift.

44. 은혜로 구원받았다는 말은 이 세상의 그 어떤 것으로도 바꿀 수 없는 값어치 있는 존재라는 말입니다. Being saved by grace means that we are the ones with immeasurable worth that cannot be changed by anything in this world.

45. 이를 마틴 로이드 존스는 로마서 강해에서 은혜는 불가 항력적인 것이라고 했습니다. Martin Lloyd Jones said that grace is irresistible in his sermon on Romans.

46. 너무나 소중해서 반드시 받아야 하고, 너무나 값어치가 귀해서 함부로 받을 수 없는… 그렇지만 주실 때 너무나 감사하면서 받아야 하는… it is so precious that we must receive it, and at the same time, it is so valuable that we cannot receive it casually and lightly. We must receive it with deep gratitude.

 

47. ‘값싼 은혜’라는 표현이 있습니다. There is an expression, “cheap grace.”

48. 이 은혜를 너무 쉽게 생각해 버리고, 잊어버리고, 그 은혜를 무시하고, 내 힘과 능력으로 살아가려고 한다면 이 은혜를 값싸게 만들어 버리는 것입니다. If we think of this grace too lightly, forget it, ignore it, and try to live by our own strength and power, we make this grace cheap.

49. 은혜를 무시해서도 안됩니다. We must not look down on grace.

50. 은혜를 쉽게 생각해서도 안됩니다. We must not think of grace too easily.

51. 은혜를 가볍게 여겨서도 안됩니다. We must not take grace lightly.

52. 은혜를 함부로 사용해서도 안됩니다. We must not use grace recklessly.

53. 은혜의 가치를 제대로 기억할 때, 우리는 진정으로 감사하며, 기억하며, 존중하게 됩니다. When we truly understand the value of grace, we will be truly thankful, remember and respect it.

54. 나 자신의 값어치가 세상 그 무엇과도 비교할 수 없는 가치임을 기억해야 합니다. We must remember that our own worth is incomparable to anything in the world.

55. 내 옆의 사람이 그리스도의 보혈로 구원 받으신 분이심을 기억해야 하는 것입니다(주소록-내가 만나는 모든 사람). We must remember that the person next to us has been saved by the blood of Christ Jesus.

56. 그러나 우리의 삶의 현장에서는 그 은혜를 잘 잊어 버리거나, 그 가치를 하락 시키거나, 무시하는 경향이 많습니다. However, we tend to forget, devalue, or look down on this grace in our lives.

57. 그러나 우리의 삶의 모든 현장은 바로 이 은혜 위에서 기초된 것임을 기억해야 합니다. We must remember that every aspect of our lives is founded on this grace.

58. 천지 창조가 바로 은혜였습니다(모든 것이 공짜). The creation of heaven and earth was grace itself.

59. [그림] 타락이후 주신 가죽 옷 자체가 은혜였습니다. After the Fall, God made garments of skin for Adam and Eve and clothed them. This was grace.

60. 십계명을 주시면서 광야 생활을 하고, 가나안 들어가는 것도 바로 어린양의 보혈, 즉 은혜 위에서 시작되었습니다. The giving of the Ten Commandments, the life in the wilderness, and entering Canaan, all started with the blood of the Lamb, which is grace.

61. [본문-신명기 5:6] “나는 너를 애굽 땅, 종 되었던 집에서 인도하여 낸 네 하나님 여호와라”. 십계명 제 1 계명 전에 무슨 말씀이 있습니까?(설명) “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” What is said before the first commandment?

 

62. 중요한 것은 이 은혜를 우리가 너무 쉽게 잊어버리고, 값싸게 여긴다는 것입니다. What is important is that we easily forget this grace and consider it cheap.

63. 아마 여러분들이 가장 소중하게 여기는 것이 있다고 합시다(예: 무한대의 신용카드 등, 한국에서도 인증서 없이도 사용되는…) Let’s say you have something that you value most (e.g., a blank check).

64. 그것을 어떻게 여기겠습니까?  계속 생각하고, 계속 보관하고, 계속 만지고… 그리고 계속 사용하고… How would you treat it? You would constantly think about it, store it, and even hold it in your hand all the time. Use it all the time…

65. 그렇게 은혜를 늘 기억하고, 늘 되새기고, 늘 감사해야 한다는 것입니다. Likewise, we must always remember, reflect, and be grateful for grace.

66. 이스라엘 백성들이 요단강을 건너가는 것도 은혜입니다. Letting the Israelites cross the Jordan River is also grace.

67. [그림] 그것을 기억하도록 하기 위해서 하나님은 요단강 안에, 그리고 건너편 길갈에 12돌을 세우게 하십니다. As a memorial, God commanded them to set up twelve stones in the Jordan River and on the other side in Gilgal.

68. 요단강 안의 돌은 가뭄이 들 때… 힘들고 어려울 때 기억하라고…(설명) The stones in the Jordan River are a reminder for times of drought and hardship.

69. 목회 현장은 잘 못 하다가는 힘 들고, 부담되고, 어려운 때가 많습니다. Pastoral work can be difficult, burdensome, and challenging if not done well.

70. 그렇게 (어렵게) 지내다가 몇 주 전에 성도라는 단어가 바로 하시드 라고 배웠고, 그 하시드는 헤세드, 즉 은혜에서 비롯된 것임을 깨달았습니다. While I was struggling, I learned a few weeks ago that the word “saint” is hased in Hebrew, and hased originates from hesed, or grace.

71. 그 때 나의 존재가 바로 은혜에서 시작된 것임을 깨달으며 새 힘을 얻었습니다. Realizing that my existence as a saint, Christian, began with grace gave me new strength.

72. 제가 은혜를 잊어버릴 때 저는 힘들게, 율법주의자가 되어 목회하며 나도 힘들게, 남도 힘들게 하며 살고, 사역했던 것입니다. When I forget grace, I struggled and worked as a legalist, making it difficult for both me and others.

73. 이러한 은혜에 대한 깨달음을 가지면서 우리 교회에서 가장 소중한 호칭이 바로 성도님이라는 사실을 다시 한번 더 깨달았습니다. With this understanding of grace, I have once again realized that the most precious title in our church is “saint,” sungdonim.

74. 저의 묘비명을 목사라고 하지 마시고, 성도라고 해 주시기를 바랍니다(저의 가족에게 하는 말입니다, 제 아내와 제 아들이 영어 프루프 리딩) I would have my title written as saint, not as pastor.

 

75. 그리고 이 은혜로 구원받은 자들을 10절에 그의 ‘만드신 바’ ‘선한 일’을 위하여 지으심을 받았다고 했습니다. Lastly, in verse 10, it says that those who are saved by grace are “His workmanship” and are “created for good works.”

76. 여기서 ‘만드심’은 포이에마, 즉 상품이 아니라 ‘작품’이라는 말입니다. Here, “workmanship” is poiema, which means not a product but an artifact, masterpiece.

77. 하나님께서 저희를 만드실 때 한 분 한 분 하나님의 은혜로 만들어 주셨습니다. When God creates us, each and every one of us was made by God’s grace.

78. [사진] 한 분 한 분이 너무나 소중한 분이십니다(신혼부부-이도현/김효정). Each one of you is very precious.

79. 그리고 그 은혜를 기억할 때, 우리는 예수님의 은혜의 만분의 일도 못 갚지만, 오늘도 주의 은혜로 작품으로 만들어진 분들을 대하며 나아가는 삶을 살아가게 됩니다. When we remember this grace, we can never repay even a fraction of Jesus’ grace, but we may approach those created by God’s grace and regard them as precious.

80. 세상에서 가장 선한 일은 바로 은혜 받은 자로서 은혜로 다른 사람에게 나아가게 되는 삶을 말합니다. The best thing in the world is a life where, as recipients of grace, we reach out to others in grace.

 

은혜로만 살게 하옵소서.  아멘. May we live by grace alone. Amen.
