(계 22:6-21)

“이것들을 증언하신 이가 이르시되 내가 진실로 속히 오리라 하시거늘 아멘 주 예수여 오시옵소서”(20)

경배와 회복(renewal)으로 끝나는 어제 본문에 이어 오늘 본문은 요한계시록 전체에 대한 요약 정리 내용이 나옵니다.  언약 말씀, 완벽한 창조에 대한 회복, 사탄의 계략과 공격, 그로 인한 환난과 핍박에 대한 대비, 교회와 성도의 역할, 기도의 중요성 등등 요한계시록에 계속 나온 삽입구의 내용을 다시 한번 더 정리해 줍니다.

이러한 약속의 말씀은 ‘반드시 속히’ 될 일 입니다(6).  그래서 ‘지금, 오늘’ 준비된 삶을 살아야 합니다(6).  말씀을 진지하게 대하고 지켜야 합니다(7, 10).  참된 새 하늘과 새 땅은 주님 다시 오실 미래에도 이루어지지만 그 믿음으로 살아가는 현재에도 이룩됨을 기억하며 참된 경배의 삶을 삶의 현장에서, 관계 속에서도 살아가야 합니다(9).  

경고의 말씀도 줍니다.  ‘불의를 행하는 자는 그대로 불의를 행하라’(11)는 표현은 역설적 표현으로서 구체적 삶의 현장속에서 실제적인 거룩한 삶을 살아가야 함을 강조한 표현입니다.  그리고 그런 삶에는 주님 다시 오실 때 반드시 상급이 있음 또한 기억해야 합니다(12).

이러한 모든 정리의 정점은 마지막 20절입니다.  ‘아멘 주 예수여 오시옵소서!’  도미티안 황제로부터 극렬한 핍박 가운데 있었던 초대교회 성도들은 이러한 요한계시록의 격려의 말씀으로 인해 순교의 고난까지도 극복하게 되는 강력한 믿음의 삶을 살 수 있었습니다.  

그래서 그들은 마지막 고백으로 ‘아멘’으로 화답합니다.  최후승리를 믿기에, 말씀으로 확신하였기에, 기도로 담대함과 평안을 얻었기에 ‘아멘!’으로 화답합니다.

그리고 ‘마라나타’라는 아람어 표현으로 알려진 ‘주 예수여, 오시옵소서’라는 고백을 힘차게 외칩니다.  이 아람어 원어적 고백속에는 ‘속히 오시기(come)를 원하는 바램’도 있지만, ‘이미 오신(has come)’ 주님에 대한 확신과 감사와 소망을 담은 신앙고백적 표현임을 기억해야 합니다.

저는 개인적으로 이 마라나타의 고백이 ‘현재의 고난을 피하고 싶은 염원에서 나온 ‘빨리 와 주세요’라는 의미라기 보다는, 이미 초림으로 오셨고, 십자가와 부활을 통해 승리하셨고, 그 분이 ‘나의 주님’(Maran)이라는 신앙고백적 대상으로서의 주님에 대한 초대교회 성도들의 전인적, 인격적, 개인적, 고백적, 관계적 표현인 ‘주님, 혹은 주여’에 더 강조점을 두어야 한다고 봅니다.  

그럴 때, 주님 언제 오시는 것에 관심이 있는 것이 아니라, 지금, 현재, 매일의 삶에서 주님을 의지하는 믿음으로 참된 승리와 기쁨의 삶을 현재적으로 살아가는 것이 요한계시록을 통해 주시고져 하신 하나님의 뜻이 아닐까 싶습니다.

그래서… 저도 이 요한계시록 전체 내용 묵상을 마감하면서 저 개인적인 마지막 응답을 이렇게 드리고 싶습니다!  

22장 전체를 통해서 약속하신 모든 말씀에 대하여…  

인도와 보호와 승리로 함께 하신다는 약속에 대하여… 

다시 오셔서 영원한, 완벽한 새 하늘과 새 땅으로 인도하실 것이라는 약속을 향하여…  

온 마음, 온 힘 다하여…  

아멘!

Revelation 22:6–21

“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (v.20)

Following yesterday’s passage which ended with worship and renewal, today’s text provides a summary and conclusion of the entire book of Revelation. It reviews major themes such as the covenantal Word, the restoration of perfect creation, the schemes and attacks of Satan, the resulting tribulation and persecution, the role of the Church and the saints, and the importance of prayer—all of which have been recurring insertions throughout Revelation.

These words of promise are of things that "must soon take place" (v.6). Therefore, we must live prepared lives today, right now (v.6). We must take God’s Word seriously and keep it faithfully (vv.7, 10). We should remember that the true new heaven and new earth will be fulfilled in the future when the Lord returns, but that reality also begins in the present through a life of faith. That is why our lives of true worship must be lived out in the everyday, in our relationships, and in the real world (v.9).

The passage also gives a warning. The phrase, “Let the evildoer still do evil” (v.11), is a paradoxical expression that strongly emphasizes the call to live a concrete, holy life in the midst of real circumstances. And we must also remember that to such a life, the Lord will surely bring a reward when He returns (v.12).

The climax of this entire summary comes in verse 20:

“Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”

The early Christians, who were undergoing intense persecution under Emperor Domitian, were empowered by the encouragement found in Revelation to live lives of strong faith—even unto martyrdom.

So, their final response was “Amen.”

Because they believed in the ultimate victory, because they had confidence through the Word, and because they received boldness and peace through prayer, they were able to respond with “Amen!”

Then comes the Aramaic expression “Maranatha”, known as “Come, Lord Jesus.”

We should remember that this expression carries not only the desire for His soon coming, but also a confessional meaning of thanksgiving and assurance that the Lord has already come, referring to His first coming.

Personally, I believe that this cry of Maranatha should not be interpreted as simply a wish to escape current suffering—as in “Please come quickly and rescue us.” Rather, it should be seen as a deep, holistic, and relational confession of the early Christians who believed that the one who already came, died, and rose again is indeed ‘my Lord’ (Maran).

When understood this way, our focus shifts from “When will He come?” to the present reality of trusting Him daily and living a victorious and joyful life now through faith. I believe this is the true intent of God revealed through the book of Revelation.

So… as I conclude this reflection on the entire book of Revelation, here is my own final response:

Regarding all the promises declared throughout chapter 22…

Regarding the promise of His guidance, protection, and victory…

And toward the promise that He will return to lead us into the eternal, perfect new heaven and new earth…

With all my heart and all my strength…
