(사순절 14일째)

떠나도 끝까지 다가 오시는 하나님

“내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니…”(시편 23:6a)

이 유명한 시편에서 ‘따르다’로 표현된 동사는 강력한 능동태의 표현입니다.  하나님의 선하심과 인자하심, 즉 하나님의 강력한 사랑이 우리를 뒤따르고, 좇고, 붙잡고, 지탱한다는 표현입니다.

우리가 도망가더라도, 간혹(자주) 넘어 지더라도, 또는 하나님을 잊어 버리고 나의 삶의 현실로 인해 정신이 온통 일에만 집중해 있을 때에도 하나님은 함께 하시고, 붙잡으시고, 일으키신다는 말씀입니다.

‘과연 그랬을까?’ 한번 생각해 봅니다.  저의 삶을 돌아볼 때, 넘어질 때가 많았고, 내 마음 대로 하고 싶을 때가 많았지만, 결국 저의 삶은 다시 하나님께로 돌아온 삶이었음을 돌아보게 됩니다.

저의 삶에서 진정으로 의지해야 할 분, 붙잡아야 할 분은 하나님 뿐이었기 때문입니다.

‘우리가 하나님만을 따라야 한다’라고 표현했다면 솔직히 자신도 없고, 낙담도 자주 되었을 것 같습니다.  저의 현실이 그렇지 못하기 때문입니다.

그러나 ‘하나님께서 나를 붙잡아 주신다’는 이 표현을 묵상하며, 솔직히 깊은 위로를 받습니다.  

그래서 그런 하나님을 더 붙잡고, 따르고, 의지하고 싶습니다.  다윗처럼...

"내가 여호와의 집에 영원히 살리로다"(시편 23:6b)

God Who Comes to Us to the Very End

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life..." (Psalm 23:6a)

The verb translated as "follow" in this famous psalm is a strong active expression. It signifies that God's goodness and mercy, that is, God's powerful love, follows us, pursues us, catches us, and sustains us.

Even when we run away, occasionally (often) fall, or forget God due to being fully engrossed in the realities of our life, God is with us, holding us, and lifting us up.

'Has it really been so?' I ponder. Looking back on my life, there were many times I fell, and many times I wanted to do things my way, but in the end, I see that my life has always returned to God.

The only one I truly needed to rely on, to hold onto, was God.

If it were said that 'we must only follow God,' honestly, I would have felt unsure and often disheartened. Because my reality is not always so.

Yet, pondering the expression 'God holds onto me to the very end,' I sincerely receive deep comfort.
