(이사야 37:1-20)

앗수르의 산헤립 왕의 교묘한, 강력한 경고(36장)를 듣자 히스기야 왕은 옷을 찢고 굵은 베 옷을 입고 여호와 하나님께 나아갑니다(1).  하나님의 사람 선지자 이사야에게 신하들을 보내며 하나님의 강력한 도움만이 유일한 길임을 처절하게 고백하며 의지합니다(1-4).

이사야 선지자의 첫번째 말씀은 두려워 하지 말라(6)는 말씀이며, 산헤립 또한 연약한 피조물에 불과한 존재임을 되새겨 주십니다(5-7).  그런데 상황은 좀 더 악화 됩니다.  

구스(에디오피아) 왕 디르하가 앗수르를 대적하러 오고 있다는 소식을 듣자, 산헤립은 더 강력하게 이스라엘을 협박합니다(8-13).

살면서 내가 처한 상황이 내 힘으로 도저히 감당하기 어려운 때가 있고, 또 어떤 때에는 현 상황 보다 더 어렵고 악화되는 상황으로 인도함 받게 되는 참으로 처절한 상황을 맞이할 때가 있습니다.  

현재 비가 오지 않음에도 불구하고 빙하가 녹음으로 인해 처절한 진흙 홍수를 겪게 된 네팔의 상황이… 그리고 앞으로 2차 홍수가 날 수 있음으로 인해 구조 조차 제대로 하지 못하는 처절한 상황을 보면서…

간절한 마음으로 히스기야 왕의 기도를 우리도 함께 드리기를 원합니다(1, 14-20).  

“히스기야 왕이 듣고 자기의 옷을 찢고 굵은 베 옷을 입고 여호와의 전으로 갔고…여호와여 귀를 기울여 들으시옵소서 여호와여 눈을 뜨고 보시옵소서…우리 하나님 여호와여 이제 우리를 그의 손에서 구원하사 천하 만국이 주만이 여호와이신 중을 알게 하옵소서…”(1, 17, 20).

1. 오늘 큰 고통 가운데 있는 네팔과 티벳의 모든 고난을 겪고 있는 분들을 위해 간절히 기도 드립시다.   2. 조속한 복구와 회복을 위해 기도드립시다.

3. 그리고 지구 온난화와 같은 인재의 상황이 바르게 극복 되도록 돌아봄과 회개와 올바른 창조 질서를 위한 헌신의 삶을 위해 기도합시다!

(Isaiah 37:1–20)

When King Hezekiah heard the subtle yet powerful threats of King Sennacherib of Assyria (Chapter 36), he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and went before the LORD God (1). He sent his officials to the prophet Isaiah, the man of God, desperately confessing and relying on the truth that the powerful help of God was the only way forward (1–4).

The first word from the prophet Isaiah was, “Do not be afraid” (6). He reminded Hezekiah that Sennacherib, too, was merely a weak creature before God (5–7). But the situation became even worse.

When Sennacherib heard that Tirhakah, king of Cush (Ethiopia), was coming out to fight against Assyria, he threatened Israel even more forcefully (8–13).

There are times in life when the circumstances we face are simply too overwhelming for us to handle in our own strength. And there are also times when we find ourselves in truly desperate situations, where things become even more difficult and worsen beyond what we are already facing.

As we look at the desperate situation in Nepal, where people have experienced devastating mud floods caused by melting glaciers even though there has been no rain…

And as we see their desperate circumstances in which even rescue efforts cannot be carried out properly because there is a possibility of a second wave of flooding…

With earnest hearts, let us also pray together the prayer of King Hezekiah (1, 14–20).

“When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the LORD… LORD, give ear and hear; LORD, open your eyes and see… Now, LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are the only God.” (1, 17, 20)

1. Let us earnestly pray today for the people of Nepal and Tibet who are suffering amid great hardship and pain.

2. Let us pray for a swift recovery, restoration, and rebuilding of the affected areas.

3. And let us pray that we may properly respond to human-caused crises such as global warming—through honest reflection and repentance, and by committing ourselves to lives that honor and preserve God’s good order in His creation.
