(사사기 2:1-10) 길갈에서 보김으로!

(사사기 2:1-10)
여호와의 사자가 가나안 정복의 출발점이라 할 수 있는 ‘길갈’에서 ‘보김’으로 올라와 이스라엘 백성에게 말씀합니다. 하나님께서는 그들의 조상들에게 약속하신 언약에 신실하셨고, 앞으로도 그 약속을 영원히 지키실 것이라고 선언하십니다(1).
그러나 하나님의 은혜와 인도하심을 경험한 이스라엘은 그 말씀에 온전히 순종하지 않았습니다. 가나안 족속의 제단을 헐고 우상을 제거하라는 하나님의 명령을 따르지 않고, 그것들을 그대로 남겨 두었습니다(2). 결국 그들이 제거하지 않은 것들이 오히려 그들의 삶을 무너뜨리는 가시와 올무가 됩니다(3). 타협하여 남겨 둔 죄악의 문화가 결국 자신들의 삶과 공동체를 끊임없이 괴롭히고 넘어뜨리는 원인이 된 것입니다.
여기서 ‘길갈’과 ‘보김’의 대비가 매우 의미 있게 다가옵니다. ‘길갈’은 하나님께서 “애굽의 수치를 너희에게서 떠나가게 하셨다”고 선언하신 곳입니다(수 5:9). 하나님의 은혜로 과거의 수치를 벗고 새로운 정체성과 사명을 부여받은 곳입니다. 그런데 이제 이스라엘은 ‘우는 자들’이라는 뜻을 가진 ‘보김’에 서 있습니다(4-5).
하나님의 언약에 대한 믿음과 온전한 순종에서 출발했던 이스라엘이, 타협과 불순종으로 인해 결국 눈물과 아픔의 자리로 내려온 것입니다.
신앙 공동체에서 가장 중요한 것은 하나님의 언약을 믿고 그 말씀에 온전히 순종하는 살아 있는 신앙입니다. 우리의 신앙은 단지 우리가 현재 하나님을 믿고 살아가는 것으로 끝나지 않습니다. 우리가 어떤 모습으로 하나님을 따르느냐에 따라 다음 세대에 물려주는 영적 유산도 달라집니다.
우리가 하나님을 신뢰하고 말씀에 순종하는 삶을 살아간다면, 우리의 후손들에게 믿음, 자유, 기쁨, 하나님 나라의 가치라는 귀한 영적 유산을 물려주게 될 것입니다. 그러나 우리의 작은 타협과 불순종을 방치한다면, 우리가 제거하지 않은 죄악과 세속적 가치가 다음 세대에게 옆구리의 가시와 올무가 되어 고통과 아픔을 남길 수도 있습니다.
그러므로 오늘 나는 무엇을 선택하고 있는지 돌아봅니다.
길갈의 은혜에 머물러 보김의 눈물로 내려가지 않도록, 하나님의 언약을 붙들고 말씀에 온전히 순종하는 제자의 삶을 살아갑시다.
내가 오늘 살아가는 믿음의 모습이 곧 다음 세대에게 물려줄 영적 유산이 될 것입니다.
나는 후손들에게 무엇을 물려주기를 원합니까?
가시와 올무입니까, 아니면 하나님 나라의 자유와 기쁨입니까?
(Judges 2:1–10)
The angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal, which can be seen as the starting point of Israel’s conquest of Canaan, to Bochim, and spoke to the Israelites. He declared that God had been faithful to the covenant He had made with their ancestors, and that He would continue to keep His promises forever (v. 1).
Yet, even after experiencing God’s grace and guidance, the Israelites did not fully obey His word. They failed to follow God’s command to tear down the altars of the Canaanites and remove their idols, leaving them in place instead (v. 2). In the end, the very things they had failed to remove became thorns and snares that brought them down (v. 3). The sinful culture they had allowed to remain through compromise eventually became a constant source of trouble and stumbling for their lives and their community.
The contrast between “Gilgal” and “Bochim” is especially meaningful. Gilgal was the place where God declared, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you” (Joshua 5:9). It was the place where, by God’s grace, Israel left behind the shame of the past and received a new identity and a new calling. But now Israel finds itself at Bochim, a name that means “those who weep” (vv. 4–5).
Israel had begun from a place of faith in God’s covenant and wholehearted obedience, but through compromise and disobedience, they eventually came down to a place of tears and pain.
The most important thing in a community of faith is a living faith that trusts God’s covenant and wholeheartedly obeys His Word. Our faith does not end simply with the way we believe in and follow God today. The way we choose to follow God determines what kind of spiritual legacy we will pass on to the next generation.
If we live lives that trust God and obey His Word, we will pass on to our children and descendants a precious spiritual heritage of faith, freedom, joy, and the values of God’s kingdom. But if we allow even small compromises and acts of disobedience to remain unchecked, the sins and worldly values that we failed to remove may become thorns in their sides and snares for the next generation, leaving behind pain and suffering.
Therefore, today I pause and ask myself: What am I choosing?
Let us not remain satisfied with the grace we experienced at Gilgal only to descend into the tears of Bochim. Instead, let us hold firmly to God’s covenant and live as disciples who wholeheartedly obey His Word.
The way I live out my faith today will become the spiritual legacy I leave to the next generation.
What do I want to pass on to my children and descendants?
Thorns and snares, or the freedom and joy of the Kingdom of God?

이스라엘 백성이 ‘길갈’에서 ‘보김’으로 영적 유산을 후손들에게 물려 주었다면, 이제 우리의 후손들에게는 ‘보김’에서 ‘길갈’로 영적 유산을 물려 주어야 하지 않을까요…?
그 마음으로 9월 찬양과 기도의 밤 때 간절히 기도 드렸습니다.
보김이라는 ‘슬픔과 울음’의 상황이 지금 여러가지 세상의 모습 같습니다. 분열과 분단의 상황, 중독과 얽매임, 끌려감의 상황, 경쟁과 시기의 상황, 오해와 감정 상함의 상황, 이기와 재난의 상황 등 등…
그러나 하나님은 ‘보김’의 상황을 그대로 두지 않으리라 믿습니다. 그것이 사사기 이고, 선지서들입니다. 심판과 재난에 대한 경고는 회개할 때 회복 시켜 주신다는 의미가 더 강합니다. 물론 회개하지 않을 때, 엄청난, 무서운 재난과 심판이 임합니다.
이 경고를 진지하게 듣고, 진실하게 회개하고 나아갈 때 하나님은 이 시대의 보김 같은 상황을 길갈(수치와 죄악을 물러가게 함)의 상황으로 만들어 주실 줄 믿습니다.
(Reflection)
If the people of Israel had passed on their spiritual heritage to their descendants from Gilgal to Bochim, shouldn’t we now pass on a spiritual heritage to our descendants that leads them from Bochim back to Gilgal…?
With that heart, I earnestly prayed during our September Night of Praise and Prayer.
The situation of Bochim, a place of “sorrow and weeping,” seems to reflect many of the realities we see in the world today: division and separation, addiction and bondage, situations in which people are being controlled and led astray, competition and jealousy, misunderstanding and wounded emotions, selfishness and disasters, and so on.
But I believe that God will not leave us in the situation of Bochim forever. This is what we see throughout the Book of Judges and the prophetic books. The warnings of judgment and disaster point even more strongly to God’s desire to restore us when we repent. Of course, when there is no repentance, severe and terrifying judgment and disaster will come.
But when we take these warnings seriously, genuinely repent, and turn back to God, I believe that God will transform the Bochim-like situations of our time into situations like Gilgal—a place where shame and sin are rolled away and removed.
