(사사기 1:1-10)

“여호수아가 죽은 후에”라는 말씀으로 사사기는 시작됩니다.  가나안 정복을 이끌었던 강력한 지도자 여호수아가 죽은 상황은 이스라엘 공동체에 큰 위기였을 것입니다. 그러나 이스라엘은 지도자의 공백 앞에서 낙심하거나 두려워하지 않고, 참된 지도자이시며 유일한 인도자이신 여호와께 묻는 기도로 나아갑니다(1-3).

살아 계신 하나님께서는 유다가 올라가도록 명령하시며, 가나안 땅을 그들의 손에 넘겨주시겠다는 약속을 다시 확인해 주십니다(2).  그렇습니다. 신앙은 하나님을 믿는 것이며, 하나님의 약속을 신뢰하고 그 말씀에 순종함으로써 약속의 성취를 경험하는 삶입니다.

그러나 하나님을 믿는 것만큼이나 순종의 과정도 중요합니다.  유다가 자신의 형제인 시므온 지파에게 함께 올라가자고 요청한 것(3), 그리고 베섹 왕 아도니 베섹을 사로잡아 그의 엄지손가락과 엄지발가락을 자른 것은 당시의 전쟁 관습에서 비롯된 행동이었지만(4-7), 하나님의 뜻에 온전히 집중하기보다는 인간적인 판단과 방식이 섞여 있음을 보여 줍니다.  우리의 순종 역시 하나님의 뜻을 따르는 것 같으면서도 때로는 우리의 생각과 방법이 함께 섞일 수 있음을 돌아보게 합니다.

그럼에도 유다 자손은 예루살렘을 정복한 후에도 산지와 남방과 평지로 계속 나아갑니다(8-10).  여기에서 중요한 것은 한 번의 순종으로 멈추지 않고 계속해서 순종했다는 사실입니다. 하나님의 약속을 믿는 사람에게 순종은 한 번의 결단으로 끝나는 것이 아니라, 삶의 자리에서 계속 이어져야 하는 여정입니다.

가나안 정복은 단순히 이스라엘의 영토를 넓히는 일이 아니었습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 약속하신 땅에 하나님의 통치를 세워 가는, 하나님 나라를 위한 중요한 과정이었습니다.

오늘 우리에게도 동일한 사명이 주어져 있습니다.  예수님께서는 “너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 … 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라”고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 28:19-20).

가나안에서 시작된 하나님의 나라를 향한 순종의 역사는 오늘 우리의 삶의 자리에서도 계속됩니다.  

나는 오늘, 내가 살아가는 삶의 현장에서 어떻게 하나님의 나라를 세워 가시겠습니까?

(Judges 1:1–10)

The Book of Judges begins with the words, “After the death of Joshua.” The death of Joshua, the strong leader who had led Israel in the conquest of Canaan, must have been a great crisis for the community of Israel. Yet, rather than becoming discouraged or fearful in the absence of their leader, the Israelites turned to prayer, inquiring of the LORD, who is the true Leader and their only Guide (1–3).

The living God commanded Judah to go up and once again confirmed His promise to give the land of Canaan into their hands (2). Yes, faith means trusting God, and it is a life of experiencing the fulfillment of His promises by trusting His Word and obeying it.

However, the process of obedience is just as important as believing in God. Judah asked the tribe of Simeon, his brother, to go up with him (3). Also, after capturing Adoni-bezek, king of Bezek, they cut off his thumbs and big toes (4–7). Although this was an act rooted in the warfare customs of that time, it also reveals how human judgment and methods could become mixed with their obedience rather than being fully focused on God’s will. This causes us to reflect on our own obedience. At times, even when we seem to be following God’s will, our own thoughts and methods may become mixed into our obedience.

Nevertheless, the people of Judah continued to move forward after conquering Jerusalem, advancing into the hill country, the Negev, and the lowlands (8–10). What is important here is that they did not stop with one act of obedience but continued to obey. For those who trust in God’s promises, obedience is not a one-time decision; it is a journey that must continue in the everyday places where we live and serve.

The conquest of Canaan was not simply about expanding Israel’s territory. It was an important part of establishing God’s reign in the land He had promised, and of advancing the kingdom of God.

The same calling has been given to us today. Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations … teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20).

The story of obedience to God and His kingdom that began in Canaan continues today in the places where we live and serve.

오늘 묵상의 핵심 내용은 어려운 상황을 만날 때에도 약속의 말씀 붙잡고 나아가야 하며, 순종하되 사람의 생각을 섞지 않는 순수한 순종, 끝까지 순종의 삶을 살아야 한다는 것.  그리고 이는 가나안을 넘어 열방으로, 그리고 당대를 넘어 주님 오실 때까지 계속 되어야 할 하나님 나라 건설의 사명이라는 사실…

한마디로 오늘의 키워드를 ‘온전한 순종-온순’이라고 생각하며 하루를 지냈습니다.  온전한 순종을 기억하며 기준으로 삼을 때, 나도 모르게 타협하거나, 살짝 편안하려고 하는 상황을 벗어나게 되었습니다(물론 당연히 휴식과 적절한 탄력성 & 융통성은 필요하구요…^^)

온전한 순종의 자세를 기억할 때 많이 도움이 되었습니다.  그러나 문제는 이러한 ‘영적 깨어 있음’보다 더 큰 상황이 생길 때 ‘둔감해’ 진다는 사실입니다.  쉬지 말고 기도하라는 주님의 말씀이 정말 맞습니다.  우리는 삶의 현장에서 영적 전쟁의 상황입니다.

끊임없이 죄성은 나 자신만을 보게 하고, 사람 혹은 상황만을 보게 합니다.  그래서 사사기의 혼란이 생기게 된다고 봅니다.  사사기를 극복하는 유일한 길은 유일한 왕, 참된 왕 되시는 하나님만을 왕으로 모시고, 그 왕 앞에서 사는 것입니다.

사사기를 시작하는 오늘 뿐만 아니라, 앞으로 계속 사사기를 마감하는 10/14까지 ‘온전한 순종-온순’을 기억하며 나아가기를 기도 드립니다.  44일 동안 유일한 왕 되시는 하나님 앞에서 ‘늘 깨어’ 살기를 원합니다. 

(Reflection)

The central message of today’s meditation was this: Even when we face difficult circumstances, we must hold firmly to God’s promises and keep moving forward. We are called to obey with a pure obedience—an obedience that does not mix in our own human reasoning—and to live a life of obedience all the way to the end. And this is not merely for us today; it is the mission of building the Kingdom of God that must continue beyond Canaan to the nations, and beyond our generation until the Lord returns.

In a word, I spent the day thinking of today’s key phrase as “Complete Obedience—Onsun (온순)”. When I remembered complete obedience and made it my standard, I found myself stepping away from situations where I might unconsciously compromise or simply try to make things a little more comfortable for myself. (Of course, we still need appropriate rest, flexibility, and adaptability… ^^)

Remembering the posture of complete obedience was a great help to me. But the problem is that when circumstances become greater and more overwhelming than our spiritual alertness, we can become spiritually “insensitive.” The Lord’s command to “pray without ceasing” is truly right. We are living in the midst of spiritual warfare in the realities of our everyday lives.

Our sinful nature constantly causes us to focus only on ourselves, or only on people and circumstances. And I believe this is what leads to the confusion and disorder we see throughout the Book of Judges. The only way to overcome the pattern of Judges is to acknowledge God—the one true King—as our only King, and to live every moment before Him.

So, not only today as we begin the Book of Judges, but throughout this journey until we finish Judges on October 14, I pray that we will continue forward remembering “Complete Obedience—Onsun (온순).” For these 44 days, I want to live “always spiritually awake” before God, the one and only true King.
