(사사기 3:12-31)
온전하지 못한 회개는 결국 다시 ‘악한 길’로 나아가게 합니다(12). 이스라엘이 ‘또’ ‘다시’ 하나님 앞에서 악을 행하자, 하나님께서는 모압 왕 에글론을 통해 이스라엘을 18년 동안 다스리게 하십니다(14). 고통의 시간은 단순한 징계의 시간이 아니라, 하나님께로 다시 돌아오게 하시는 시간이기도 합니다.
에글론의 압제 가운데 이스라엘 자손은 여호와께 부르짖습니다(15). 여기서 기도를 다시 돌아봅니다. 성숙한 기도는 단순히 ‘하나님께서 나를 위해 무엇을 해 주실 것인가’를 구하는 나 중심의 기도에 머물지 않고, ‘하나님께서 무엇을 원하시는가’를 구하는 하나님 중심의 기도로 자라가야 합니다. 그래야 상황이 달라지더라도 하나님을 계속 신뢰하며 하나님의 뜻을 따라 살아갈 수 있습니다.
하나님께서는 이스라엘을 구원하시기 위해 왼손잡이 에훗을 세우시고, 그를 통해 모압 왕 에글론을 제거하게 하십니다(15-29). 그리고 이스라엘은 모압의 압제에서 벗어나 80년 동안 평온을 누리게 됩니다(30).
평온하고 좋은 때일수록 그 평온의 근원이 하나님이심을 잊지 말아야 합니다. 어려울 때 하나님을 찾는 것만큼이나, 평안할 때 하나님을 기억하는 것이 중요합니다. 평안이 계속될 때 교만하여 하나님을 떠나는 것이 아니라, 오히려 하나님께 감사하며 더욱 하나님을 의지해야 합니다. 그럴 때 우리는 계속해서 하나님의 인도하심 가운데 살아갈 수 있습니다.
에훗 이후에는 삼갈을 세우셔서 블레셋을 물리치게 하십니다. 삼갈은 소 모는 막대기 정도의 평범한 도구를 사용하여 블레셋 사람 600명을 물리칩니다(31). 하나님께서는 특별한 능력이나 특별한 배경을 가진 사람만 사용하시는 분이 아닙니다. 평범한 사람과 평범한 도구도 하나님의 손에 붙들리면 놀랍게 사용될 수 있습니다.
돌아보면 상황이 좋든 어렵든, 평온하든 고난 가운데 있든, 기간이 짧든 길든, 능력이 많든 평범하든, 우리의 모든 상황을 아시고 다스리시며 이끄시는 분은 하나님이심을 깨닫게 됩니다.
오늘날은… 진정으로 성도와 교회가 하나님 중심의 신앙으로 살아가야 할 때라고 믿습니다. 우리가 살아가고 있는 이 시대가 마치 사사기 시대와 비슷하게 보이기 때문입니다.
(Judges 3:12–31)
Incomplete repentance eventually leads us back to the “evil way” (v. 12). When Israel again and again did evil in the sight of the Lord, God allowed Eglon, king of Moab, to rule over them for 18 years (v. 14). A time of suffering is not simply a time of discipline; it can also be a time when God calls us back to Himself.
Under Eglon’s oppression, the Israelites cried out to the Lord (v. 15). This makes us reflect on our prayers. Mature prayer should grow beyond a self-centered prayer that asks, “What can God do for me?” into a God-centered prayer that asks, “What does God want?” Only then can we continue to trust God and follow His will, even when our circumstances change.
God raised up Ehud, a left-handed man, to deliver Israel by defeating Eglon, king of Moab (vv. 15–29). Israel was then freed from Moab’s oppression and enjoyed 80 years of peace (v. 30).
Especially in peaceful and good times, we must remember that God is the source of our peace. Just as we seek God in times of difficulty, we must remember Him in times of peace. Rather than becoming proud and turning away from God, we should give thanks and depend on Him even more. Then we can continue to live under His guidance.
After Ehud, God raised up Shamgar, who defeated the Philistines with something as ordinary as an oxgoad—a simple farming tool (v. 31). God does not use only people with extraordinary abilities or backgrounds. He can use ordinary people and ordinary things in extraordinary ways when they are placed in His hands.
Looking back, we are reminded that whether our circumstances are good or difficult, peaceful or painful, short or long, and whether we are highly gifted or ordinary, God is the One who knows, rules over, and leads us through every circumstance.
I believe this is a time when the people of God and the church truly need to live with a God-centered faith, because the world we live in today often looks much like the days of Judges.

오늘은 어떤 상황에서든 관계 없이 ‘하나님 중심’으로 살아야 하는 것을 묵상하며 하루를 지냈습니다. 상황이 좋든, 나쁘든 관계 없이 어떤 때에도 ‘하나님 중심’으로 살아가는 것이 중요함을 깨닫습니다.
그러나 자기 중심적이고, 죄성으로 가득 차 있고, 연약한 인간이기에 좋을 때는 교만하고, 안일해 지기 쉽고, 어려울 때는 낙담하고, 불안해 하고, 좌절하기 쉽습니다.
그러나 하나님 중심의 자세로 살아갈 때, 상황에 관계 없이 감사와 믿음으로 살아갈 수 있음을 고백합니다. 에훗의 리더십에 의해 지나게 된 80년간을 영적 안일과 나태로 살아갈 것이 아니라, 하나님 중심으로 80년을 살아갔더라면 그 이후 어떤 상황이 되어도, 즉 상황은 나빠져도 영적 상태는 더 강력하게 나아가는 전천후 신앙의 삶을 살아갔을 것입니다. 사사 시대를 극복하는 것이죠…
그런 삶을 살기 위해서… 매일 매일 하나님 중심의 삶을 기억하고, 의식하고, 실천하며 살아야 겠다고 다짐합니다. 아멘!
(Reflection)
Today, I spent the day reflecting on the importance of living a God-centered life, regardless of the circumstances. I am reminded that whether things are going well or poorly, it is important to remain God-centered at all times.
Yet, because we are self-centered, sinful, and weak human beings, we can easily become proud and complacent when things are going well, and discouraged, anxious, and frustrated when we face difficulties.
But I confess that when we live with a God-centered perspective, we can continue to live with gratitude and faith regardless of our circumstances. Instead of spending the 80 years following Ehud’s leadership in spiritual complacency and laziness, if Israel had lived those 80 years centered on God, they could have developed an all-weather faith—a faith that would continue to grow even when circumstances became worse. In other words, they could have overcome the recurring cycle of the period of the Judges…
To live such a life, I resolve to remember, remain conscious of, and put into practice a God-centered life every single day.
