(사순절 15일째)

새로 태어났습니까?

“사람이 거듭나지 아니하면 하나님의 나라를 볼 수 없느니라”(요한복음 3:3)

바리새인이며 유대인의 지도자였던 니고데모가 밤에 예수님을 만나러 온 것은 커다란 위험을 감수하는 일이었습니다.  그러나 그렇게 위험을 감수하고서라도 그가 예수님께 와야 했던 이유가 있었습니다.

그는 모든 것을 가지고 있었습니다.  부도, 명예도, 지위도…  그러나 그의 마음에 풀리지 않는 의문이 있었습니다.  ‘내가 가진 것이 전부란 말인가?  보다 더 중요한 어떤 것이 있는 것은 아닌가?  그렇다면 꼭 가져야 할 그 무엇은 어떤 것인가?  나는 올바른 길로 가고 있는가…?’

사회적으로 성공한 일류 엘리트 였지만 그는 자기가 사는 현실에 대한 ‘괴로움’을 갖고 있었음에 틀림없습니다.  예수님은 니고데모의 고민이 결코 한가한 것이 아님을 아셨기에 그것을 치유해 주셨습니다. 

‘당신은 처음부터 다시 시작해야 하오.  당신의 사회적 지위, 성취, 부, 평판을 모두 내려 놓아야 하오.  당신이 지금까지 살아온 방식이 당신으로 하여금 하나님께서 주시는 온갖 생명의 선물들을 받지 못하도록 막고 있소.  당신의 가치관, 정체성, 삶의 목적, 삶의 의미 등 모든 면에서 당신은 새롭게 태어나야 하오.’

나는 새롭게 태어났습니까?

나는 하나님을 만났습니까?

예수님께서 니고데모에게 주신 이 말씀을 나도 온 마음 다해 들어 보기를 원합니다.

“하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라”(요한복음 3:16)

Have you been born again?

"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3)

It was a great risk for Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a leader of the Jews, to come to Jesus at night. However, there was a reason he had to come to Jesus, even at the risk of danger.

He had everything. Wealth, honor, and status... But there was an unresolved question in his heart. 'Is what I have everything? Isn’t there something more important? If so, what is that something I must have? Am I on the right path...?'

Despite being a top elite who had succeeded socially, he undoubtedly had 'anguish' about the reality he was living in. Jesus knew that Nicodemus's concerns were not trivial and healed him.

"You must start over from the beginning. You have to let go of your social status, achievements, wealth, and reputation. The way you have lived up until now is preventing you from receiving all the gifts of life that God offers. In terms of your values, identity, purpose in life, and the meaning of life, you must be born again."

Have I been born again?

Have I met God?

I wish to listen to these words given to Nicodemus by Jesus with all my heart.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
