세상과 깊이 동화되지 않은 삶

“여호와의 말씀이 엘리야에게 임하여 이르시되 너는 여기서 떠나 동쪽으로 가서 요단 앞 그릿 시냇가에 숨고 그 시냇물을 마시라 내가 까마귀들에게 명령하여 거기서 너를 먹이게 하리라”(열왕기상 17:2-4)

본문에서 엘리야는 아합왕의 핍박을 피해 도망다니는 상황이었습니다.  그 핍박을 피해 도망간 사르밧에서 만난 과부도 마지막 음식 재료로 마지막 음식을 준비하는 절망의 상황이었습니다.  이들은 모두 절대절명의 상황에 놓였다는 공통점을 갖고 있습니다.

그러나 죽음 앞에서 삶에 대한 간절함은 극대화 됩니다.  우리는 탄압하는 권력에 대항하다 절망에 빠진 엘리야, 희망을 잃은 과부와 죽은 그녀의 아들과 같은 이들에게 둘러싸여 있습니다.  우리도 이런 상황 속에서 생명이 다시 살아나는 힘을 갈망/열망합니다.

그런데 이런 절망의 최고점에서 우리는 새로운 삶의 자세와 삶의 경로를 발견하게 됩니다.  그것은 우리의 모든 실존적 상황/한계 위에 계시는 절대적/전능의 우리 하늘 아버지께서 뻗어 주시는 손길입니다.

우리가 잘 차려진 세상 왕의 밥상에 익숙해 있다면 우리는 그 보다 더 위에 계시며 온 세상, 온 우주를 통치하시는 ‘그 분의 손길’을 결코 붙잡지 못하고 말 것입니다.

세상에 동화된 사람은 결코 이 땅을 넘어 전 우주, 전 역사, 전 시간대를 다스리시는 그 분을 통해 새롭게 시작되는 새로운 삶의 방식과 능력을 체험하지 못하게 될 것입니다.  

내가 지금 붙잡고 있는 줄의 한계를 깨닫고 ‘놓는’ 순간, 

영원한 줄을 ‘붙잡을 수 있는’ 새로운 시작을 맛보게 됩니다.

나는 어느 줄을 붙잡고 있습니까?

A Life Not Deeply Assimilated into the World

"The word of the LORD came to Elijah: 'Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.'" (1 Kings 17:2-4)

In this passage, Elijah was fleeing from persecution by King Ahab. He ended up in Zarephath, where he met a widow who was preparing what she thought would be her last meal with the last of her food supplies. They all shared the commonality of being in dire situations.

However, the desperation for life intensifies in the face of death. We find ourselves surrounded by those like Elijah, who fell into despair while opposing oppressive powers, the widow who lost hope, and her son who died. In such situations, we yearn for the power that revives life.

But it's at the peak of this despair that we discover a new attitude towards life and a new path. It's the hand extended by our absolute and almighty Heavenly Father, who exists above all our existential situations/limitations.

If we are accustomed to the well-prepared table of the world's kings, we will never grasp the hand of 'Him' who is above and rules over the whole world and the universe.

A person assimilated into the world will never experience the new way of life and power that starts anew through Him who rules over the entire earth, the whole universe, all of history, and all times.

The moment we realize the limit of the rope we are holding and 'let go,'

we taste a new beginning, where we can 'grasp' the eternal rope.
