나는 누구를/무엇을 자랑하는가?

“그러나 하나님께서 세상의 미련한 것들을 택하사 지혜있는 자들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시며 하나님께서 세상의 천한 것들과 멸시 받는 것들과 없는 것들을 택하사 있는 것들을 폐하려 하시나니 이는 아무 육체도 하나님 앞에서 자랑하지 못하게 하려 하심이라”(고전 1:27-29)

나르시시즘이라는 표현이 있습니다.  자신이 제일 잘 낫다고 생각하는 자기 연민, 자기 착각의 마음 상태를 말합니다.  사람들은 누구나 어느 정도는 이러한 나르시시즘 적인 마음이 있다고 생각됩니다.

하나님을 떠난 인간이 본능적으로 하나님 아닌 다른 것에서 만족과 기쁨을 누리기 위해서 노력하고 추구합니다.  그리고 결국은 마음과 눈길이 자기 자신에게로 갈 수 밖에 없는 것을 보게 됩니다.

남들 보다 좀 더 많이 갖거나, 남들 보다 좀 더 높은 지위를 차지 하거나, 남들 보다 좀 더 많은 인기를 끌거나… 심지어 남들보다 좀 더 도덕적으로 보이거나… 더 심지어 남들보다 좀 더 거룩하게 보이거나…

그러나 어떤 물질로도, 명예로도, 심지어는 종교적 칭송으로도 영원하면서도 궁극적인 만족을 누릴 수 없습니다.  하나님의 형상으로 창조함 받은 사람이 그 형상의 근원 되시는 하나님과 연결되고, 그 하나님으로 채움 받는 삶이 되지 않고서는 결코 참된 만족을 누리지 못하는 것입니다.  

오랜 기간 참된 만족과 행복을 찾으려 했던 어거스틴이 결국 이렇게 고백합니다.  ‘하나님께서 당신의 생기를 불어넣으셔서 만드신 우리의 영혼은 이 세상의 어떤 것으로도 결코 만족을 누릴 수 없습니다. 오직 영혼을 지으신 하나님 품 안에 있을 때만 우리는 진정한 만족을 누릴 수 있습니다.’

나는 누구를/무엇을 자랑합니까?

나의 자랑이 하나님이시기를 간절히 소망합니다.

“영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다”(요한복음 17:3)

* 광고: 다음 고난주간(3/25-29, Holy Week or Passion Week) 동안 매일 저녁 함께 예배당에 모여 주님의 십자가를 더욱 깊게 묵상하고, 함께 기도하는 ‘공동체 묵상과 기도의 시간’을 갖습니다.  (월-목, 금요일은 성금요일 @ 모두 7:30 PM, 장소: 교회 예배당, 7:20 PM 에 오셔서 미리 개인 기도 하시면 됩니다)

Whom/What do I boast in?

"God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him." (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)

There's a term called narcissism. It refers to a state of mind of self-pity and self-delusion, thinking oneself to be the best. It is believed that everyone has a degree of narcissism in them.

Human beings, having strayed from God, instinctively strive and seek satisfaction and joy in things other than God. And ultimately, they end up focusing on themselves.

Whether it's having more than others, achieving a higher status than others, attracting more popularity than others… or even appearing more moral than others… or even more holy than others…

Yet, no amount of material wealth, honor, or even religious praise can provide eternal and ultimate satisfaction. A person created in the image of God cannot enjoy true satisfaction unless they are connected with God, the source of that image, and live a life filled by Him.

After a long search for true satisfaction and happiness, Augustine finally confessed, "Our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you." Our souls, made by God's breath, cannot find satisfaction in anything of this world. Only in the embrace of God, who made our souls, can we find true satisfaction.

Whom/What do I boast in?

I earnestly hope that my boast is in God.

"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." (John 17:3)
