(사순절 18일째)

나의 생각안에 갇히지 않기를…

“이는 내 생각이 너희의 생각과 다르며 내 길은 너희의 길과 다름이니라.  여호와의 말씀이니라.  이는 하늘이 땅보다 높음 같이 내 길은 너희의 길보다 높으며 내 생각은 너희의 생각보다 높음이니라”(이사야 55:8-9)

이사야에게 주어진 이 말씀은 이스라엘이 바벨론 제국의 포로 된 상태로 있을 때 주어진 말씀입니다.  포로와 노예의 신분이었기에 이스라엘 백성이 가질 수 있는 생각은 절망과 좌절 뿐이었을 것입니다.

그러나 그런 암울한 상태의 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님은 인간의 생각과 다른 길, 인간의 생각보다 더 높은 생각이 있음을 말씀해 주십니다.

종종 자녀들이 자신들의 한계 속에서만 부모의 능력을 제한하는 것을 볼 때 가 있습니다.  그러나 부모는 자식이 생각하는 것보다 더 넓고 큰 인생 경험과 안목, 능력을 갖고 있습니다.  자신의 생각으로 제한하는 만큼 자녀는 그 안목에 갇혀 지낼 때가 많습니다.

이는 우리와 하나님과의 관계에서도 적용됩니다.  피조물이 갖는 시각의 한계, 능력의 한계로 무한 능력의 창조주 하나님을 제약, 제한 할 때가 있지 않는지요?  사순절 기간 중 하나님의 광대, 무한하심을 좀 더 묵상하고, 의지할 수 있기를 원합니다.

인간이 생각하는 한계의 끝은 아마 ‘죽음’일 것입니다.  그러나 예수님은 십자가의 죽음 앞으로 담대히 걸어가심으로 부활의 길을 우리들에게 열어 주셨습니다.  

앞도, 뒤도, 옆도 다 막힌다고 삶이 다 막혔다고 생각하지 않기를 원합니다.

Not to be imprisoned within my own thoughts...

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8-9).

These words given to Isaiah came at a time when Israel was in captivity under the Babylonian empire. Being captives and slaves, the only thoughts that the people of Israel could possibly have had were those of despair and frustration.

However, to these people in such a bleak state, God speaks of a path and thoughts that are different from human thoughts, higher than human thoughts.

Often, we see children limiting the abilities of their parents within their own limited understanding. Yet, parents have a broader and larger life experience, perspective, and capabilities than what their children can imagine. To the extent that children limit themselves with their own thoughts, they often live confined within that perspective.

This applies to our relationship with God as well. Are there times when we, as creations, restrict the infinite Creator God with our limited perspective and capabilities? During Lent, I hope we can meditate more on God's vastness and infiniteness and rely on Him more.

The end of human thought might be 'death.' But Jesus boldly walked towards the death on the cross, thereby opening the way to resurrection for us.

I hope we do not think that life is completely blocked when it seems like there is no way forward, backward, or to the sides.
